Drillers pitcher/Kelley graduate Frazier invited to Rockies' major league spring training

Bishop Kelley graduate Parker Frazier is among 24 non-roster players who have been invited by the Colorado Rockies to their major league spring training that starts next week in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Frazier, who appeared in one major league spring training game last year, pitched better than his won-loss record indicated in 2012 as he was 5-14 with a 3.88 ERA in 27 starts for the Tulsa Drillers. He led the Texas League with 167 innings pitched and his ERA ranked ninth.

Frazier goes into spring training with a realistic shot at moving up to Triple-A, but could return for a second season with the Double-A Drillers.

“That’s the goal — to move up, but if I don’t move up to Triple-A, this is a good place to be,” Frazier said last month. “Hopefully if I start here I won’t be here too long.”

Last year’s Drillers pitching coach Dave Schuler and then-manager Duane Espy said they saw Frazier mature as a pitcher throughout last season. Espy is the Drillers development supervispor and Schuler has been promoted to Colorado Springs.

“Sometimes I would get too caught up with who was at the plate, but Duane Espy got me going to just focus on my job,” Frazier said. “I think I grew mentally as well as physically.

“My main goal is to give my team a chance to win, go deep in ballgames and save my bullpen.

Frazier gave an example of his more mature outlook.
“I learned not to get caught up when bad things happen,” Frazier said. “There was a game when there was a home run that barely went fair by the leadoff guy in an inning. Instead of getting caught up in that, I got the next three guys.”

Other 2012 Drillers who received non-roster invitations to the Rockies’ major league camp are pitchers Dan Houston and Nick Schmidt, third baseman Nolan Arenado, first baseman Ben Paulsen, outfielders Corey Dickerson and Kent Matthes, and catchers Lars Davis and Jose Gonzalez.
