Help yourself to the following hoop tourney pearls.

The dumbest suggestion of the year was made Bob Knight, who hasn't done anything in what, 15 years? He wants to add 64 more teams to the tournament.

With that in place, here's what the regular season would mean: nothing.

Smaller teams would be sent packing.

Somebody set Knight up with a rabbit hunt.

Once again, only eight teams can win a national championship. The men's hoop tournament is sport at its most elite. The lone "outside" type this year is Memphis, which is in tough. It can't shoot free throws and could lose before the final four to any of these: Mississippi State, Oregon, Michigan State, Temple, Pitt.

We list the chances of Memphis reaching the Final Four at: 40.5 percent.

The top seeds are secure this weekend. The rest of the bracket will be one big mess. We count 18 possible upsets in the first two rounds. In a mid-bracket so wide open, it's impossible you could get trashed early because everybody else will be getting pounded as well.

Top first weekend major upset: Miami over Texas.

Another shocker: Temple over Michigan State.

Another: Davidson over Gonzaga.

Stay close, upsets come to us in our sleep, the way it happens with the Arquette woman on "Medium."

Best sleepers: Louisville, Wisconsin, Stanford, Marquette, Miami, Pitt, Michigan State, Ucon, Purdue.

Easiest draws of the top seeds, in order of simplicity:

1. Kansas.
2. North Carolina.
3. UCLA.
4. Memphis.

Another easy draw: Duke.

ORU has one-third of one percent of a chance at defeating Pitt.

OU/St. Joe is a toss-up.

You're asking yourself if Miami over Texas was a joke.

Good question.

The answer is no.

The huge question is.......WHAT IS TU THINKING? OK, sit by the phone long enough and somebody will call? Want to do some cyphering? How is UTEP seeded higher than TU in the NOBODY IS WATCHING, CARING, PAYING ATTENTION TO, Invitational. Biggest misnomer of the year. Only tournament that you call them and tell them you are coming.
MIKE (5 years ago)
Picker, did you leave out Zona upsetting West Virginia purposely? Call me crazy, but I have the Wildcats also upsetting a streaky Duke team the very next round.

How do you list Temple over Michigan State as a shocker but then list Mich State as a sleeper?

Did you mean they are just sleepy?
Miami won't make it out of the first round. Nice try.
Zach (5 years ago)
TU is still playing, mant teams are done. That is what they were thinking. Wouldn't you want to keep playing? Who cares when/where/what.
OU is going down.
ORU better pack light.
South Alabama will beat Gonzaga (for the simple fact that I want it to be so).
Otherwise, I only care if I win money from this.

OU-St. Joe's is a toss up...but Texas will muder Miami....Why? D.J. Augustine...plus Abrams seems to finally be hitting his mark again.

Davidson over Gonzaga I really would classify as an upset in seeding only. I haven't checked the line, but Davidson might even be favored. I think they've won 22 games in a row.

Hey Picker, I admire your courage in actually making these predictions before the games are played. You could either look really good or really bad, and you know there will be plenty of crazies ready to pounce if you fall flat. Good luck!

Alpha Dog: Here's what TU must be thinking, not much. It has to sell 5,000 seats at $12 to break even! It owes
60k per round! Did you see the great line in the story in the World: Calls to that tourney's office were not returned!!!
Mike: You're probably right about Zona, Huggins team is full of bozos. But didn't Zona lose about 20? We never see the west teams enough.
Jeff: Mich State is a sleeper if it lives.
Zach: Gonzaga, great coach, lousy team, sort of a contradiction, isn't it.
Steve: Texas shoots too many 3's for my liking.
Matthew: Come on, high seed over low seed, gimme a break.
Objective Fan: Stay close.

The Picker needs a heart. I think TU fans are giddy to get to watch their team play some more. Walls will be missed; Jordan is somethin else. This is really a treat. From the sound of things, TU is at 5,000 tickets sold. They'll make the money back. Why do you need to be such a grump, Dear Picker?

Good analysis, World Picker. Bobby Knight has made one Sweet 16 appearance since 1995, and that was with Texas Tech. Expand the field? No way. In fact, the field should be 64 teams. The play in game should be eliminated. It demeans the two teams who are playing in it. Not only is Memphis a poor free throw shooting team, it is not exactly adept at shooting the three, either. Duke does not have much of an inside game which makes them a vulnerable team in the second round and beyond. Duke seems to depend too much on the outside shot. If they can't find points from their post players ,I don't see how they can make the final four. Those upsets you picked are definitely possible. That's what makes this tourney so great. Anything can happen.

World Picker, unlike "OBJECTIVE FAN" I do not admire your courage for making your predictions: it is what you get paid for. Besides, you keep your identity secret and hide from the public so you are really just a coward.
Rather, I laugh at your lame attempts at sports journalism/analysis.
I laugh at Zach, also. He must be broke if he is trying to make money from his predictions.
If nobody is watching, ALPHA DOG, how come you and your brother (World Picker) know so much about the seedings/ tournament?

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
