ESPN Is At It Again

The talking point at the world's most unfortunate monopoly is as obvious as the disconnect between the chump ESPN sports personalities and the public: Sam Bradford won't make it!

From the once-decent writer but current TV sad sack Skippy Bayless, to meathead analysts like Trend Dilfer, OU quarterback Bradford is being credited with all the physicality of Lady GaGa: Sam is too brittle, too immobile, too inexperienced in pro stuff, even possibly too smart. The burdensome Bayless, a big Tebow proponent, even said Saint Tim's arm is as strong as Bradford's!

Numerous ESPN jokers have professed to prefer Notre Dame quarterback Clausen over Bradford. If Clausen is a first-rate NFL quarterback, we're dancing with the stars next season. Name one team Clausen ever beat.

Why is ESPN so slanted?

Because it has the NFL draft in prime time, of course: ratings!

What the ESPN gaggle of clowns doesn't understand is it's the games we like, not them.

Would we draft Bradford number one?

Probably not.

He hasn't proven he can take a punch. But Peyton Manning is no hulk.

Bradford would surely seem to have more than the ESPN mouths credit him with, more than a halfway decent chance.

Why Pick you surprise me.ESPN is very credible just reflect on how many coaches have changed programs due to their inside information. I mean it was great when Bob Stoops was coaching at Oklahoma. He has done a great job at Cleveland Browns, Florida, Norte Dame and the Dallas Cowboys. My only wish they would have the great talent we have in Tulsa... Coach Pat Jones, etc

First pick qbs are quite the dice roll regardless of Bradford's possible fragility. The Dallas paper recently noted that while some became Super Bowl studs (Aikman,Manning, Bradshaw) a few more (Testaverde, Bledsoe) had decent careers, more than you would imagine were just outright lousy and made you wonder if they started for their high school teams. How the latter happens, what with the "brilliance" of scouts and all is actually one of the true curiousities of the draft process.

Fortunately for Bradford, neither ESPN's former jocks nor the Picker and his staff actually decide who goes first on Thursday. Just a shot in the dark but maybe the NFL team owners and GMs, even the ones with the Rams, know more about how to draft employees than the two aforementioned groups...He's goin first and is gonna get about $45 million in guaranteed money. Pick at him if you will, he'll get back to all you 'know it alls' on the way back from the BANK!

yeah, Keith Olbermann is really hurting, makes about 3 mill/year on msnbc or which ever network he is on.

My bad George, just googled Olbermann's salary, 7 million.

ESPN stands for the Eastern Sports Programming Network. That's a big reason why they are so in love with QBs, such as Florida's Jesus Tebow and Notre Dame's Saint Jimmy. With the exception of USC, ESPN tends to have a bias toward the Eastern half of the country.

Tebow throws the ball like a shot-putter. Jimmy can't even take on a random guy in a bar.Black eye, anybody? How can he take on NFL defenses? Bradford is questionable in turns of health and mobility. However, he as at least as good of a chance to be successful in the pros as the Saint does, and a better chance than the Messiah.

Claussen has one advantage over Bradford and that is being in an offensive system that is employed in the NFL and has been extremely successful in the NFL. Notre Dame didn't win as many games not because Clausssen couldn't produce points, but because Charlie Weis couldn't coach a defense to stop a 1 legged RB. QB's that play in pro-style offenses in college tend to be able to recognize defenses quicker. While Bradford may have the physical tools to play QB in the NFL, he has not been asked yet to read a defense being more a product of an offensive system that most NFL teams only use in a 2-minute drill.

Bradford (like Blake Griffen)will end up having an at best "average" pro career.

Willie: Coach Pat, yeah, much as he knows, you might think he could pick a winner on his own now and again. We saved his career, letting him copy off our big picks last season.

Dcood: You're right there, Sam will be able to afford tremendous orthopedic care the rest of his life.

George Wagner: Olberman leaving was one of the Top Ten ESPN moments. Another was when they shipped the clownish Neil Everett to the west coast and put him on in the middle of the night.

Bla: If Clausen is so good, why can't anybody name a single big game he won in his lengthy Notre Dame career.

Here's a real downer about ESPN and the prime-time draft coverage: Chris "Can of Corn" Berman got a new contract and will continue to haunt events like this. He was fairly fun back in the day. Unfortunately he is still serving up the same leftovers.
But What Do I Know? (3 years ago)
Just remember, he -- might -- go -- all -- the -- way!

The TW had an interesting article earlier this week on first round picks. For all that $$$$ not many reallymake it. Look at The Browns a couple of year ago and then with the guy from Notre Dame who is no longer a Brown. It is a crapshooy and it is all hype and media thanks to ESPN. I will not waste my time watching that crappola. RUN!!!!

Know What: He starts that tonight, I will back, back, back out of the room.

Notas, it's about 50-50 with first-round quarterbacks, right?

"If Clausen is so good, why can't anybody name a single big game he won in his lengthy Notre Dame career?"

Answer: It's because he hasn't won a single big game in his lengthy Notre Dame career. He beat up on a bunch a pansies that couldn't play defense.

"Peyton Manning is no hulk"

He has the record for the most consecutive games started to open a career by a quarterback (192). I'd say Manning is pretty tough.

If only Berman could--go--all--the--way to the unemployment office I would be one happy Okie. Clausen couldn't even beat the Midshipmen, who don't have the luxury of recruiting a bunch of blue-chippers, two out of the last 3 years. And Glenn616, the Navy defense, among other teams, did just fine against the Irish.

ESPN can take a flying leap; I plan on watching the coverage on the NFL network. Maybe Stacey Dales will be on again tonight, she is awesome!

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
