ESPN just made Stoops' job a little tougher
Published: 1/20/2011 10:05 AM

You see the headline in today's World? "OU hopes to create TV channel this year." It isn't just because Texas has a new toy and the Sooners want one, too. It isn't just because the money is nice, although it's really, really nice.

Read what Kirk Bohls wrote in today's Austin American-Statesman about what ESPN Bevo will do for Longhorn coaches:

It will "give them an unspeakable recruiting advantage. Starting this fall, a budding soccer star in San Diego or the next Canadian basketball forward at Findlay Prep can turn on the Texas network every day and watch the prettiest coeds in the nation and see that the sun shines 364 days in Austin…

"And when Texas adds a slew of attractive high school football games like Lake Travis-Westlake and others on its network to feed the football-crazy subscribers, Bob Stoops and Mike Sherman will raise a ruckus over the Longhorns' unfair recruiting advantage."

That advantage existed even before yesterday's bombshell.

The Sooners have worked recruiting wonders under Stoops, annually raiding Texas for extremely helpful talent. But ask the coach how what kind of grind that is.

Beating Mack Brown down in the Cotton Bowl? Doable, obviously.

Beating Brown (not to mention the Austin-centric attractions Bohls referenced) in the living room of some Texas 5-star? One of the toughest chores in college football.

FanHouse recently gave OU an A for its current recruiting class. Texas received an A+, along with the comment: "Despite a lackluster effort on the field in 2010 and the loss of Will Muschamp to Florida, the Longhorns have arguably the best recruiting class in the country."

Scout.com ranks OU No. 10 nationally for its class. Texas is No. 1.

ESPN.com ranks OU No. 6. Texas, again, is No. 1.

Get the picture? Longhorn football targets will, starting next fall, courtesy of ESPN. They'll like what they'll see, not that they didn't already.

They seem to always have a great recruiting class. But that doesn't always result in wins. Look at last year. OU and OSU are and will be better than Texsucks next year.

I think Texas recruits great players but not players that always fit their system (Garret Gilbert). The success they have had against OU has been with a mobile QB and he is not one. Just because they have five stars doesnt always mean they should recruit them. I think OU does a better job recruiting to their system and help three star players become all conference because of coaching.

Agree with Top Flight in that OU has a better coaching staff, top to bottom, than UT. Every "elite" NCAA school will ultimately have their own channel, so the impact will certainly be diluted. But until then, the Horns have a leg up on the rest of us with spreading their hype.

I agree with you Top Flight. There is no denying the fact that Texas and Mack Brown can recruit like crazy- and they have shown that they are a top flight program with their national championships and Big 12 Championships. But, I think that recruiting is way over-hyped from year to year and that we fans don't realize how much hard work and dedication and coaching needs to take place from the time these kids leave high school and get to a college campus. We have seen it over and over again, with OU even, where a guy comes in that is rated 4-5 stars and never pans out.

I guess I said all of that to say that we shouln't be worried about Texas and recruiting. It all works out in the end.

Texas cannot take all of the Texas talent. OU and OSU will continue to do more with less and will stay competitive with Texas even though they have all of the advantages. For a team with Texas' advantage and recruiting to go 5-7 is pretty amazing, and they won't be much better this year either...
