Early Showdowns are Great

Considering the number of worthless games played by college football teams early in the season, a game like Texas-Texas Tech is a refreshing break early in the season.
Very few teams are willing to take a chance and play a high-profile game early in the year. USC did it and beat Ohio State. Oklahoma State did it and beat Georgia. Alabama got past Virginia Teach in another big game.
However, there are very few huge non-conference games. No one wants to take a chance.
So, scheduling a few big conference games early in the season, like the SEC has done for a number of years, is a good idea for the Big 12.
Texas Tech and Texas is a huge game in the league and it is great to see it just three weeks into the season.
Here's hoping the Big 12 will continue to schedule important league games in September.

This seems to be one of those subjects where it is easy to say good things on both sides. As a fan of college football, I appreciate competitive and meaningful games in the early part of the season. OTOH, Conference games should be held after all non-con games to ensure the weekly buildup of conference pressure applies equally to all teams. UT will get to take a cupcake week in November to play Central Florida while everybody else is slugging it out, especially the South Division.
