Early Tourney: Ones a Joke
Published: 3/19/2010 1:54 PM

As reported here earlier, the one seeds have it too easy.

The ones play near, or at, home. The first game is a bye and the second is a scrimmage.

ESPN is to blame for the Big East flop start, as it hypes this conference non-stop.

CUSA should consider disbanding.

One of the worst teams is New Mexico, which should be terminated by Wash.

The Texas coach is horrible at games.

The NIT is a totally meaningless tournament. How meaningless? Penn State won the NIT title last season and is the laughingstock of the Big Ten this season. South Carolina won the NIT title, and where did that get them? Not to the NCAA Tourney. Tommy Amaker won the NIT title with Michigan in 2004 and got fired 3 seasons later. Mike Jarvis won it in 2003 and got fired the next season. OU won the WNIT in 1994, and had a losing record 2 seasons later. The NIT is a joke. I'd rather watch bass fishing on TV than watch the Not In Tournament.

The previous comment was in regards to T-Who? Right on about New Mexico. One of the one seeds forgot to show up in Oklahoma City (e.g. Kansas). Regardless of home field advantage, you still have to show up to win games in the tourney.
ESPN stands for Eastern Sports Programming Network. That's why ESPN hypes the Big Least so much.
Rick Barnes did as bad of a job coaching this season as Jeff Capel.
C-USA was no worse than the PAC-10 was this year. Should the PAC-10 be disbanded, Mr. Picker?

Glenn616 is unbelievably uninformed. He doesn't realize UNC won the NCAA championship last year, and didn't qualify this year. He also doesn't understand that college athletics (football and basketball) are summed up in "What have you done for me lately". Booster expectations have more to do with a coaches firing than anything, and if a school shows signs of greatness one year, and falters 2-3 seasons afterwards, that coach will be fired. How long did it take Coach John to be fired after he won a couple rounds in the NCAA?

The NIT is a second-tier tournament. Typically, the NIT teams are better than the bottom-half of the NCAA tournament. It is a great tradition, and allows teams to continue to play post-season. Perhaps the 6 major conferences send too many teams to the NCAA. But I love the NIT and it's rich tradition.

TU Homer, I am fully aware that NC is in the NIT this season after winning it all last season. I agree with you on your first two points. If you wanna keep your job as a head coach, you need to win enough games.
I don't watch the NIT games because it isn't for a national championship. Why waste your time watching a tournament with mostly empty arenas and with teams having very little to play for? You don't have to be a good coach to win an NIT Title. Just ask Buzz Peterson, Mike Jarvis, Tommy Amaker, or Ed DeChellis. In order to get far in the Big Dance, you need a good coach.
In regards to NIT teams being better than the lower-half NCAA Big Dance teams, I can name about 20 of those teams that are better than the NIT teams: Florida, ODU, Murray, Robert Morris, SHSU, St. Mary's, UNI, Wash., Ohio, SDSU, etc.
If you wanna watch the NIT, go ahead. I'll just find something better to watch on TV.
