Enough Already TU AD
Published: 3/13/2011 7:08 PM

It was reported in this newspaper that the TU athletic director was campaigning with vigor to get the Tulsa basketball team into the NIT, a competition for also-rans.

This is not something for which you campaign.

An NIT berth is something they dump on you, like a chore you don't want.
An NIT berth is like having to perform community service as a part of a penalty.

After many years of no NCAA tournament bid, campaigning for an NIT spot is particularly depressing.

What's wrong with TU basketball?

This.

"What's wrong with TU basketball?"

Doug Wojcik. Next question.
SoonerSkins (last year)
He wants the NIT not the CBI.

He obviously can't get into the NCAA's so he's trying the next best thing.

That just happens to be the NIT.

Just fighting for his team.

ESPN had a hayday with UAB getting into the Big Dance this year so maybe TU dodged a bullet. UAB will be one and done anyways.

Well Said, The Picker. NIT = Not In Tournament.

Pick, come on now. I know the NIT isn't anyone's first choice but let's not act like every team in it is of the "also ran" variety.

At least a quarter of the teams in it are as good as or better than seeds 13-16 in the NCAA tournament....especially this year.

Please apply..these jobs are open, Arkansas, Manhatten, Wyoming

TU could create a curricum that is more attractive to their potential student-athletes.

Not a basket weaving basketball degree, but something in PE or Athletic Management that a ball player could earn a worthwhile degree in.

Hard to recruit basketball players that are able to also earn an engineering degree at TU.

Until they add these type programs, they are missing out on many great ball players that chose to go elsewhere.

Domo, TU basketball did just fine with the present curriculum until the powers that be decided to quit hiring coaches who had higher aspirations. Top players want to play for top programs. TU will continue to be mediocre until its program earns respect. Dumbing down the curriculum won't help.
But What Do I Know? (last year)
I read about all these problems - sitting down, standing up, academics too high (although that's always the bragging point of TU), bad coach, bad crowds, no parking. Here's a new take. Those Tubby years thru the Peterson years (remember him?) we were just lucky. This is exactly where we should be and it is where we will be until we get lucky again.

I remember going to a TU in the 90's when TU played UTAH in a nationally televised game & this woman got mad at me for standing up & cheering....

She wouldn't stop & I waved at an usher & told him to make her stop bothering me, she wouldn't, so I turned around & looked at the guy sitting beside her & told him that if she touches me again, me & him are going to have a major problem.... She left me alone after that....

All she had top do was stay home & watch it on TV....

I didn't say anything about dumbing down the academics...I said give some degree alternatives, away from Engineering, Law, Petroleum related, and Business.

Many student athletes graduate from other colleges with degrees in Marketing, Communications, Teaching certificates...that is not dumbing down...that is just offering programs that would attract more potential recruits.
But What Do I Know? (last year)
Any idea of the majors of the current players?
jjones6993 (last year)
Maybe it is just me, but, TU only loses Hurtt next year. Granted he is their best player. Returning Clarkson, Harralson, Pope, Richard, and Idlet is a pretty strong nucleus. Playing a few games in the NIT would have been quite beneficial IMO.

What is the difference between the picker and any other Joe Schmo that posts on an internet message board? Nothing...they both use anonymity to cover up their outlandish opinions and ignorance.

True compared to 2000 this isn't something we should be doing, but at the same time I'd much rather have Bubba lobbying for the NIT as opposed to the CBI or CIT.

As for what's happened? I think at least part of the answer is found next door with the rebirth of the football program.
The Picker (last year)
Bubba needs to lobby for better players.

ESPN has disgraced itself as never before, with the Hack Team of Bilas, Vitale, Digger and Gottlieb crying foul for Colorado being left out! Colorado? Colorado stinks. The truth behind the story is: ESPN lost the games to CBS! It is a big, fat spoil sport. Thank heavens for CBS. In still more great TV news, ESPN lost the Triple Crown horse races to NBC!

And here's this note. Remember Clarke and Page, the two can't-miss prospects from this area, supposedly the greatest shooters since the rounding of the basketball? Their teams missed the tournament.

So, will the Picker write a special column for the NCAA games here in Tulsa?
MexiMike (last year)
Pick, are you off your rocker? Colorado most certainly got hosed. It's not just ESPN saying that either. They may not have been world beaters this year but they certainly did enough to get in over a team like UAB.

Also, what do Page and Clarke have to do with their teams missing the tournament? In most cases in college ball, it takes more than just one player for a team to win consistently. I can't speak about Clarke because I don't follow Arkansas basketball but Page did more than just hold his own this year.
The Picker (last year)
Mike, Colorado stinks. It beat Kansas State three times? K-State stinks. Send us a note when your ring gets in, we'll do a photo.

The Picker (last year)
Ted, I'll just blog along.

Here's a good sleeper possibility, Vegas to stay with KU. Seriously. Nobody sees teams west of here play much. Most can't play a lick. Vegas can. It's a tough team with a good coach.

As regards the others, Arizona has had its moments. Ill and Oakland stink.
MexiMike (last year)
Pick, K-State is a five seed. Colorado also beat Texas, did they not?

Look, the entire field is down this year. You know that. It's not about whether or not Colorado stinks. It's about whether or not they stink as bad as some of the at-larges that were allowed in the field of 68. And they certainly don't.

And another ring joke? Really? Time to stock up on some more originality, Pick. You're really starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
