Enough Embarrassment, OK?

The results of Gridiron Looney Tunes are in.

Gundy is a laughing stock for being unable to control himself.

The media is a laughing stock because, poor babies, the columnists and reporters are too sensitive for criticism -- they can dish out cheap shots but can't take them.

Everybody loses.

Moving on, mercifully.

Does OU at Colorado feel a little like Boise State to anybody else? The coach (from Boise) is a wild sort of character, more than capable of numerous trick plays. The freshman quarterback is tough and can move it. The game is an all-or-nothing type year-making affair.

Sure, Colorado was buffaloed at home by Florida State. So?

Beware.

Here's something pretty amazing: Remeber the greatest team in the history of sports, the USC football squad that obliterated OU? The quarterback off that team has been benched. Reggie Bush is flopping. Receiver Mike Williams has been traded already and doesn't play much at Oakland. Big runner White plays from the one-yard line on in at Tennessee. Anybody seen any defensive players from that team?

The team that disappeared.

Picker, I would slow your roll on Bush. He had a good rookie season after a really slow start. The Saints are not real good this year, unfortunately. Lofa Tatupu is a great backer for the Seahawks and Troy Polamalu made for the 2003 USC national champs.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
But they're not playing nearly as well as expected, correct?

I totally disagree about Bush. Expectations were for him to be something very special. I doubt the Texans would trade for him with the defender they caught the devil for drafting.

He looks like an OK punt returner, debatable tailback.

After the first couple of weeks watching the Beefaloes, I would have taken exception with your comment about young Hawkins being a good quarterback; and as far as fairness is concerned, the jury is still out on that issue. But...some of the Sooners' hairiest games have taken place in Boulder's thin air. I look for the score to be a wound-down version of the TU final...around 45-24.

The laughingstock are the journalists rising up to blindly protect one of their own and reading the the comments blasting them and praising Gundy.
Jeremy (5 years ago)
Interesting take on the former Trojan players from 2003. I agree that most of them have not performed at the highest level. Kinda says something about the value of TEAM play in all levels.
Jeremy (5 years ago)
OU is 4-0 against the number so far this season. Eventually, the line value will swing the other way, and I agree with the picker that this week may be the time it happens. For one, CU has a solid defense and is at home. Secondly, this really is OU's first true road game of the season. I like Smith's pick of about 45-24, which is right at the number. I won't play this game on either side for $$. BTW, my lock of the week (Toledo) pulled me to 2-2 for the season. Hopefuly, I'll get to over .500 this weekend.
Jeremy (5 years ago)
One more thing concerning OU-CU. 45-24 might be a little too high for a total. I expect this game to go under the total with these defenses.
WSmith (5 years ago)
Jeremy, I don't go along with the statement that Colorado has a solid defense. They allowed 28 to Colorado State, 33 to Arizona State, and although Florida State only racked up 16, the Cinnamon Rolls have a pathetic offense this season (their new offensive coordinator hasn't been working out), and Miami, Ohio, while shut out by Colorado, also sucks on offense (they put up 14 against Ball STate and 10 vs. Cincinnati). The best game Hawkins has coached in his short tenure in Boulder was last year's opener against Georgia in Athens when the Buffs almost won. Sooner apologist or no, until Oklahoma shows signs of vulnerability on offense I'm going to have to stick with them to cover that spread. It's pretty simple; they have such a preponderance of talent on both sides of the line of scrimmage this year that they're overcoming the coaching gaffes that have sunk them in years past.

Picker,
You may want to note that Mike Williams declared early for the draft after a lower court ruling that Maurice Clarett could declare early for the NFL draft. This was, of course, later overturned. However, since Mike Williams had already hired an agent, he was denied a return to USC and thus, could not face Oklahoma in the 2005 Orange Bowl (2004 football season). This may have contributed to Williams' flopping, much like declaring early contributed to Clarett's abysmal NFL "career."
WSmith (5 years ago)
How did declaring early affect Clarett's NFL career? Did going to team camps cut into his armed robbery time? Did consultations with his agent take away from the time he might otherwise have used defrauding insurance agencies? I'm a little fuzzy on this one...
JIMBO (5 years ago)
UT-Norman will have no problem with CU. CU coach Hawkins needs another year or two, then watch out.
WSmith (5 years ago)
I agree with Jimbo. Crowder had a hand in selecting Hawkins (also sat on the board that chose Stoops) and they swear by Hawkins. Hope they're not swearing at him by this time next year. The only chance Colorado has of making it close (besides the thin air) is if the Sooners are looking ahead to TX.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
The reaction to my Colorado warning sounds like the reaction to my OSU and Mich picks one week hence. Therefore, double-beware.
WSmith (5 years ago)
To bet on Oklahoma, giving up 22 points, in Boulder sounds foolhardy, granted. Anyone who knows anything about the history of the rivalry knows how iffy a big spread can be up there between these two. But I beg to disagree with you on this one. Colorado simply isn't very good. Let's bet...you lose, you buy me a Lottaburger next time I venture south. I win, you buy me half a dozen Coney Isanders. Does that work for you?

Aren't you the one who said Alabama was great?
Sure, I'll take your food.
WSmith (5 years ago)
I said what??? Alabama was great? I said that? Ummm...Ich spreche keine englisch...
Jeremy (5 years ago)
OU is 4-0 ATS this season. There is no way that any sane person would put REAL $$$ against the Sooners. Now, in a picking contest, I could see someone taking the generous points. I have bet and won on OU twice this season, but won't lay the points this week. I only play 1-3 games each Saturday, and this one just isn't in mytop 3 right now.
Jeremy (5 years ago)
Teams under consideration for my top pick this weekend: Alabam +2.5 over FSU, Purdue -21 over happless ND, Arkansas -35.5 over North Texas.
Jeremy (5 years ago)
Arkansas is coming off two losses and plays Chatanooga next week. Plus, NT stinks. Bama plays a terrible offensive team in FSU after a tough loss at home. FSU's offensive coord. used to be on Saban's staff! Plus, the Tide only has Houston on deck for homecoming. The TIde wins outright in Jacksonville.
Jeremy (5 years ago)
Alson thinking about Clemson -2 over struggling GTech. Thoughts anyone?
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Jeremy, Clemson over a sinking Tech is one of those obvious picks that can get a person in the soup.

It looks like it would be the unanimous side to be on; and those 90-10 games are a bit frightening.

I forgot the Eagles/Giants pick in the paper...for the contest. There's a note about it elsewhere. For the record, I'm taking the Giants plus two and a half with the Eagles.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Anybody: Won't Oregon handle Cal?
Greg (5 years ago)
Picker said "Beware". Colorado did not need any trick plays to win. They kicked behinds. Take away OU's two easy scores and this wasn't even close. Darn good call on this one Picker.
Ken (5 years ago)
Looks like all the OU fans can quit worrying about who they will play in the national championship. I wonder who Boren is going to write a letter to this time.
NN (5 years ago)
Gundy a laughing stock????

Last I checked, he had over 90% support from the public and the only ones who disagreed were knee-jerk columnists who got their panties all in a wad because one of their own got called out. You couldn't be more wrong on that one. Gundy is everyone's hero. The BS that regularly comes from the know-it-all media won't be tolerated.

Sure, some of the quotes can be made funny and used in creative jokes, but that only makes him more popular. Hardly an embarassment. I'm proud of him.
