Eugene is the place for me

Ten minutes after getting off the airplane, here's what I learned about Eugene, Ore.:
1. It's cool here. It was almost 90 degrees when I left Tulsa this morning. It's 62 here right now. I love it. (I had to go buy two pairs of jeans and a long-sleeve shirt.)
2. Between the airport and the hotel – about seven miles – I saw three logging trucks, hauling fresh cut logs. If they're lucky, maybe someday they'll become your Tulsa World.
3. I try to stay out of politics and religion. But scanning the AM dial for a sports channel, I heard probably 15 right-wing radio hosts and about six religious shows. (I finally did find the sports.)
4. Eugene itself, aside from burgeoning construction here and there, is flat-out beautiful. It's raining and snowing in the mountains right now to the east (I have no idea how far away those are), and to the west it's bright blue skies, mostly sunny. Being an Alaska native, I'm used to really tall evergreens. But they're pretty stunning here, too.
5. Sooner fans are going to have a good time. As for the Sooners, I'm not so sure.
