Every Town is Different

It is always interesting to go to other cities and see how their newspapers play the different stories.
In other words, what are the big stories in that city, according to the decisions made by the editors of the local newspaper.
Houston has no shortage of big sports stories. It has major league baseball, the NFL, the NBA and two Division I football teams in the city. Plus, it has such powerhouses as Texas and Texas A&M. It has tons of players at schools like LSU, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
In fact, one of the best high school players in recent Houston history is Bobby Reid, the starting quarterback at OSU.
The Cowboys play important game at Houston on Saturday night.
It was big enough to have three stories in Saturday's Houston Chronicle.
However, Houston has long been known as a pro city. And, the big story in sports was about the upcoming opening of training camp for the Houston Rockets. On Friday, it was about David Carr's quarterback rating for the Houston Texans.
The Houston Astros current homestand with the St. Louis Cardinals was at the top of the sports cover.
Yet, the lead columnist and a locally written story about the UH-0SU game were on the sports cover along with a third story on the game.
By contrast, there was no advance story on the games being played by Texas and Texas A&M on Saturday (there were graphic previews with short bits of information on every game involving Texas college football team).
I worked in Houston for five years. So, I was not surprised that college football didn't take center stage even on a Saturday morning.
Houston loves pro sports. It has sensational high school football (there were several pages devoted to area prep football on Saturday). And, there are so many colleges that it would be nearly impossible to keep up with all of the interesting games.
There are more people in the Houston area than the entire state of Oklahoma. Within that metro area, there are probably a dozen college football teams that have significant alumni bases. Of course, Texas and Texas A&M have the largest fan base.
Still, it makes for interesting decisions every weekend for the editors of the Houston Chronicle.
