Favorite Sons

Here's something that should work more than it does: hero-type players returning to their schools to coach.

It seems so natural to bring back a family member. Fortunate sons know of the tradition. They live and breathe the company line.

Yet the roll-call of former stars who have come home to roost and coach is full of wash-outs: OU, Alabama, Florida, Tulsa, Texas.

Why do former stars seem to experience difficulty returning home to coach?

1. So-so credentials are given the benefit of the doubt.

2. Pressure.

Coaches who have succeed at rinky-dink schools would seem to be the best hires imaginable.

On an upbeat note, has there ever been a more entertaining offense than TU's?

OU's so-called world-class secondary will have its hands full of air if it isn't careful.

On a more somber note, can the TU defense hold OU to less than 100 points?

Check out the Week 4 Picks: The Picker: Hotheads abound in land of (poor) sports

No doubt about it...TU's offense will test OU's defense. I don't see any way that the Sooner D will completely hold down TU's offense. Paul Smith is just too good. I expect TU to score some points (in the 20's) and gain some yards (300-400). OU might well score 100. Great game here for the local fans. Terrible night to play it on.

By the way...I was smart enough to purchase OU-TU tickets online as soon as the single game tickets became available. Result? 40 yard line, 26 rows up. I'll be there with bells on...as well as a crimson shirt.

On another note...the Pac 10 doesn't seem to be as strong as experts think. UCLA, after posting less than 300 yds vs BYU, get blown out at Utah with a 2nd team QB. Washington gets handled at home by the OSU. It's a good conference (USC, Oregon, Cal, and ASU are good), but the SEC is still the best top to bottom.

Sorry...only one more. I'm on a roll. I can't ever remember seeing a Notre Dame offense this terrible. You'd think that Coach Charlie has some experience at breaking down the opponents' defensive signals from his days at NE...

Didn't most of the local high schools move their games to Thursday?

You're right, though Jeremy, dumb night.

Getting back to the OSU-Troy game: Any team afraid to be trapped by Troy doesn't belong in a fancy new stadium. It should be surrounded by tin, playing sissies in front of 15,000. Arkansas and Florida each rushed for about 1,000 yards on Troy. The OSU play-calling was pretty terrible. Why pass? People who complain about scheduling being too tough are crybabies living abouttwo levels below the elite. Playing OU tough every seven years is no longer good enough. Mr. Gundy is probably hearing footsteps from somebody wearing expensive shoes.

The Texas quarterback looks bad.

The Big 12 is so lousy, OU must have all those ahead of them lose.

All hope is lost for OSU, they'll never be able to recruit players with egg of their faces. Not until they gain a new coach for the new digs. TU is looking good, I mean their offense is. Their defence will let (insert OU running back name here) run through them like dogs running away from Michael Vick. The big 12 stinks this year. Tech is going to slaughter the pokes. Gundy and Sutton need to coach at Tulsa Community College. Heupel does well for OU on the sidelines.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Amazing how tough it is on the former players.

Low-down as the Big 12 is, it HAS to be better than the Big 10.

Don't laugh, but I sort of like Oklahoma State plus the points with Tech. Talk about playing for your job! Plus, Tech is no good.

You know who is good and overlooked? Boston College, the quarterback throws rockets.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
What's rather frightening about the TU defense is the fact that the BYU offense is no good.
Yoda (5 years ago)
Tech may not be good, but they will still pass all over the pokes. I bet Gundy places his new ex starting quarter back at middle line backer with Woods. He may as well bench Toston for good after all of his fumbles, can you say liability? Fans are wearing black instead of orange to the tech game because it will be like a funeral, burying what hope we had this year. Instead of chanting orange power, it'll be black power. Simmons would have loved that! Tech 63, OSU 21

Patriotic t-shirts with the American Flag read "These colors never run"...OSU shirts should read "These colors don't run--nor do they tackle, pass, or execute cleanly"

I'm betting that OU doesn't score quite as "at will" as some of the pundits or fans believe.

How quickly we forget two years ago, huh? With Todd Graham back running the defense and the upgrade in overall talent on the TU roster, don't you think their defense deserves just a smidgen of respect?

Graham has already demonstrated that he doesn't like to "give up" his plans. What they saw in the ULM game didn't prepare BYU. And, what OU saw in the BYU game isn't necessarily what they are going to see Friday night.

I love Graham's use of misdirection! I'm sure the OU coaches are busily configuring their offense and defense based upon TU's first two games.

Don't be surprised if what TU does bears no resemblance. LOL

Colt McCoy's struggle this season shouldn't come as a shock; Greg Davis is still coaching the offense down there and sophomore slumps are quite common. And I'm gonna give you a couple of quick aces...Arkansas over Kentucky (lay the points) and Alabama over Georgia (lay 'em again).
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Bill, you know, early in the year, it's impossible to say exactly what will happen. BUT: BYU may not be too good on offense. It didn't do much versus UCLA, which was obliterated by something called Utah. If OU can move at will against Miami, you have to think it can chew up the yards here.

And there's no doubt TU will score at least 20. What's great is the way they roll the quarterback out and around to keep him from getting hit too much. I've never seen a team use as much of a field as TU does on offense.

Yoda, you must believe me, Tech is nothing on defense. It throws all that short stuff and runs away from bad players. It never beats a sound team. The number is so low, Vegas gives OSU a chance, so should you.

Hiring a favorite son is risky business.

Where was anybody asking: But can he coach?
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Smith: Keep this in a safe place. Alabama is average. Ark doesn't get the 110 percent rotten pass interference call, everybody KNOWS Alabama is average. Thanks to the zebra, people think Alabama is good. Of course, Georgia really stinks on offense. Two over-rated SEC teams.
Vernon (5 years ago)
The game of the year, L.V.P.D. vs O.J. The offense of L.V.P.D. may be overated and O.J. has far to many moves not to find holes in L.V.P.D.'s defensive line.
O.J. walks 64-3
WSmith (5 years ago)
I think 'Bama is a bit better than average - I'd call them good, I guess, though they are a good distance away from contending with top flight SEC teams. And yeah, Georgia's offense is woeful. That's all part of the equation. And Arkie may suck, but Kentucky is major league overrated (as was Louisville's defense, but we all know the story on that one).

And it also looks like OU is using the 'Reggie Bush' gambit to defend Ryan Broyles while keeping their nose clean. No one talks, no info is forthcoming, so the investigation stops? I've got a pretty good idea of how Broyles got a key and code to the locked gas pump...the same way all university students do. Right.

Picker, if only the TU offensive coordinator could only run the TU basketball team's offense also!

WSMITH,
OU cooperated the proper way the last time and even took action on it's own... and what did it get them? USC played stupid and maintains two national and conference titles. You say that you "have a pretty good idea." Do you have any facts? If so, call the police and share it, it's your civic responsibility. Or is it all of the typical OSU venom oozing out of you? Be truthful now. By the way, investigations are just that. Not a share as you go information gathering mission. Go back to Booneville and have a spelling contest instead of watching OSU football. You might be a much happier person. One question... will the Booneville basketball team be sober in time for the season?
WSmith (5 years ago)
PM Fan...don't be a moron. You know and I know what happened. When the story first broke it was stated that other "players were involved." What happened to that? Not that I owe anyone of your ilk any explanations, but I agree, they shouldn't cooperate with the NCAA...that road leads nowhere. In that regard, you're correct...USC sandbagged and got away with it (makes my blood boil). But I hate to see the Sooners take the same low road. Now...go away.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Some underdogs for your consideration: Aggies tonight (Thursday); Washington over UCLA; S. Carolina to take LSU to the gun. Penn State is wildly overrated, wouldn't be surprised to see Michigan right there.

All you Texas Tech lovers: that team struggled a fraction with the worst team on earth (SMU) and has no defense.

WSmith (5 years ago)
Attention everyone...you'd be well-advised to ignore the Picker's well-intentioned drivel...Miami will cover against the Aglets.
First Edition (5 years ago)
Aggies over Miami--that's funny. Miami 31, Aggies 14.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Hey Smith, you forgot your sign off: Boomer Sooner!

(Because anybody OU beats just has to be good!)
