Fed and Eldrick: Come On, Man Up
Published: 7/6/2009 4:47 PM

Isn't that just the sweetest thing, Tiger texting Federer as the two exchange quips and digs and jabs: you're the greatest, no I'm the greatest, hey, maybe we're the greatest!

Guess what, neither of you is the greatest yet.

Tiger just won a semi-pro golf tournament.

Federer just won at Wimbledon, which isn't even tennis. It's closer to paint ball, shoot and duck. Playing on the grass an Wimbledom with super-human rackets is like playing tennis on ice. Serve and walk, serve and walk, big deal. One guy had 50 aces, the other almost 30.

The only true test of tennis is the US Open.

Hopefully Nadal will be back to show Federer Express who is actually the best. Of course, it's true, that dominating Federer the way Nadal has almost cost him his body.

The British Open is up next for Tiger, whose major record compared to Jack's will determine officially who is the all-time best.

Given the way Tiger has been known to blame a quarter of a mile an hour breeze for a shot off-line, it will be interesting to see how he handles the gales of the wilds.

Offhand, it's doubtful an American will win the British.

The best games over the weekend were women's tennis and women's golf, thank you very slighlty.

Yep, Tiger can only play in pristine conditions with the lead, he'll never fully succeed at his sport because he ain't nothing more than just just over blown hype, if he was caucasion he'd be just another golfer(semi-quoting Isaiah Thomas)....The British Open, if Tiger loses there then he should just stay there because he'll be no more than a glorified loser...

England, France, Australia....nothing but crap tennis, if you can't win the U.S.of A. Open, which is the only tourney worthy of being called an Open tournament, then your just nothing....

Boy, it sure feels wonderful writing the truth instead of observing the difficulty of sports and recognizing brilliance when we see it, I'd much rather use my mind and spew out what's there....

On top of Tulsandn's comments, how about this Pick?

You are a hypocrite.

You say that the greatest ever in golf should be measured by majors won.

How is tennis any different? Federer just won his 15th grand slam which is the equivalent of a golf major. He now stands alone on top for most ever won. He also has done this in a pretty good era of men's tennis with competition from a late surging Agassi, Sampras, Roddick (to an extent), and of course, Nadal.

Pete Sampras has called him the greatest ever to play...EVER.

So whose expertise holds more water? One of the greatest tennis players of all time or a small time blog writer for the Tulsa World?

I can't wait for you to try to explain how you know more about tennis and its players than Pete Sampras.

Pick: Women's golf? Really? Turn the TV off and take the dogs for a walk.

The still show women's golf on TV?

Nadal owns Federer.

Tiger himself said Jack is the best until his major record is broken.

What's wrong with you people?
MexiMike (4 years ago)
Nadal doesn't own 15 grand slams...which are majors in tennis. If we are going by "The Picker's Standards in picking the Greatest" then you must concede that Federer is the greatest.

"Tiger himself said Jack is the best until his major record is broken."

Pete Sampras himself said that Federer is the best after Federer broke the record for most Grand Slams...what's wrong with you?

Here's what matters in golf: majors. Period.

Here's what matters in tennis: head to head competition.

Federer cries too much. True, there is crying in tennis. Still and all...

Keep spinning those double standards, Pick.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
