Feliz Navidad and Welcome to Shreveport

I woke up on Christmas Day and had breakfast on the north beach of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. My toes dangled in the sand while eating heuvos muetelenos (a local favorite).
By that evening, I was having a ham and cheese sandwich at the coffee shop of a casino in Shreveport, La.
Ah, the life of a sports writer.
I have many times gone straight from Mexico, where we often meet my in-laws for Christmas, to a bowl game location. It makes for a long day on Christmas and for a very long time away from home.
But that's the way it is. I certainly won't complain. I love going to Mexico. I love going to bowl games.
I've never been a bowl that I absolutely did not like. Usually, the host city goes out of its way to entertain and make everyone feel welcome.
Shreveport hasn't always been my favorite bowl trip but the city is working hard to change its image. The media hotel is now at a casino resort (a big change from a downtown motor hotel in past years). The stadium has been enlarged and modernized many times since the first time I came here to a game 25 years ago.
Still, it is always a little nostalgic to go from Christmas south of the border to back to work and some hotel full of football fans.
Time to get back to work.
Oh, by the way, the weather was magnificent in Mexico for eight great days.
