Finally, A New Era and New Chance for Big 12
Published: 5/4/2012 2:59 PM

The Big 12 Conference would appear to be on a path that might keep the league at 10 teams and in a relatively stable environment for at least the immediate future.
How long the peace lasts is anyone’s guess.
However, for the moment, Big 12 members seem to content to stay at 10 members and are united behind new Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.
The primary troublemakers, Nebraska and Texas A&M, are gone. The Huskers were unhappy from the first day of the Big 12. The Aggies were unhappy being in the same league with Texas.
Missouri was always looking to go somewhere else. First, it was the Big Ten. Then, when the SEC invited the Tigers, they jumped immediately.
Colorado had long believed it belonged in the Pac-12.
So, those four are gone, along with their less-than-desirable animosityu toward the Big 12.
So, Bowlsby comes to his new job in a far better situation than any of his predecessors.
At no time since the formation of the league has it appeared there was such a spirit for cooperation as there is now.
There may be a lot of reasons for the new era of cooperation.
For starters, these schools need each other. Even the schools that were looking to bolt for the Pac-12 at this time last year (Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma Stae and Texas Tech) realized the best option was to stay together and make it work.
Four unhappy schools have been replaced with two schools, TCU and West Virginia, that are delighted to be a part of the Big 12.
Finally, it appears OU and OSU can enjoy a relatively stable era of conference membership.
