Finally, a Seventh Game After the Greatest

The 10-9 victory by the St. Louis Cardinals over the Texas Rangers in game six of the World Series on Thursday night is being called “the greatest game ever played”.
My wife, born and raised in St. Louis, would agree.
But 25 years ago, Lisa shed tears after another so-called “greatest game ever played”. On Friday morning, as she watched highlights of the Cards victory, it was tears of joy. In 1986, as she sat in the parking lot of the Astrodome at a tailgate party, it was tears of sadness.
The Houston Astros lost a 16-inning thriller to the New York Mets, 7-6, in game six of the National League Championship Series.
At the time, many called it the greatest game ever played, a wild back-and-forth that was similar to St. Louis’ victory on Thursday night.
Houston, with ace Mike Scott ready to go in a seventh game, trailed 3-0 in the ninth. But, the Astros scored three runs in the bottom off the ninth.
In the 14th, the Mets took a 4-3 lead but in the bottom half of the inning, Billy Hatcher hit a two-out solo homer to tie game.
In the 16th, the Mets took a 7-4 lead. However, Houston scored twice and had the tying run on second when New York finally closed out the series.
We feel the Rangers’ pain. Our friend Steve Cross had a van that we tailgated at before and after this game.
It took hours to finally come down from the crazy highs and lows of the game.
So it is for the Cardinals and Rangers.
We didn’t get to see a seventh game after that game, the subject of a book by New Jersey sports writer Jerry Izenberg called “The Greatest Game Ever Played”.
Finally, 25 years later, my wife gets to see a seventh game after the greatest game ever played.
