Fixing TU's Football Attendance Problems
Published:

Tulsa football’s attendance has been heading south since the sellout of the game with No. 5 Boise State in 2009.
Since then, only this year’s date with Oklahoma State reached 25,000, and that was considered a disappointment despite $95 tickets.
Last week the Golde Hurricane announced a crowd of about 17,000 for the game against Marshall. TU was on a five-game victory streak heading into the game.
A year ago, Tulsa beat Notre Dame and then a week later about 17,000 showed up for a game at Chapman Stadium.
The current attendance struggles are hard to explain. Sure, if Tulsa had reasonable prices for the OSU game it would have been an easy sellout, as OSU-TU games in the past have been sellouts.
However, the continued attendance struggles defy logic. It is not the team. Tulsa is not only fun to watch but the Hurricane has won 17 of its last 23 games.
Some blame poor attendance by the students, and that is certainly possible. Some believe it is Tulsa’s small alumni base. That’s possible, too.
However, it might be the success of Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. In the past, OU and OSU alums would help put folks in the seats at Chapman Stadium.
However, both the Cowboys and Sooners have been so good lately that most alums are busy either going to games in Stillwater or Norman or watching on television.
Whatever the reason, it is hard to explain.
That makes trying to fix whatever it is even more difficult. If you don’t know the problem you can’t fix it.

It's the economy. The marginal fan is not going to drop $200 bucks to take his family to one game when you, did not attend TU, can watch 13 different games on television and don't have to park half a mile away.

Actually a family of 4 can get season tickets to 5 games for $162. That’s 32.50/game or $8.10/person/game. Not close to $200 for 1 game.

I have to think....
TU could give away tickets and it wouldn't be much better.
Everyone wants to see OU and OSU.

It is very simple: There are only 4000 TU students, most of them do not have time to go to 4-hour long football games. Even if a tremendous percentage (50%) went to the games, that would be a small dent in the attendance.
There are only 30,000 TU alumni in the world. Most of them live out of state and many live in other parts of the state.
There are over 230,000 OSU alumni and over 200,000 OU alumni
If OU & OSU had the same ratio of attendees-to-students or attendees-to alumni as TU, they would have over 200,000 attending each game.
If OU & OSU had the same ratio of season-ticket-holders-to-students or season-ticket-holders-to alumni as TU, they would have over 100,000 season ticket holders.

TU has plenty of fans. Not everything has to have hundreds of thousands of people to be great. In fact, TU's smallness allows it to be extremely selective and extremely elite (TU is better than OU or OSU in everything that really matters: average income, individual success, education quality, job opportunities).
TU is one of the premier football programs in the nation. TU's other sports are great too, despite the fact TU has a small fraction of students as its competition (e.g. tennis, volleyball, soccer).
TU does far more with far less than OU or OSU. TU is the 75th best university in the country and is getting better all the time.

Well you certainly come off as an elitist, as far as TU?
I do not consider it "one of the premier football programs in the nation" as you put it. It has been several years since they won the C-USA title and that is a non-qualifying BCS conference. And while you like TU crowds being small, I promise that the athletic department would love to have every game a sellout. The boost in income would help the other sports you mentioned.
I like TU and root for them as long as they are not playing one of the other state schools and I try to make at least one game a year as I think Chapman Stadium is a great place to watch a game and it has a great family atmosphere. But, I don't hear alot of marketing for TU football games. The product is definately worth the price, I think they just need to do a better job of getting the community to embrace TU.

I work and reside 2 hours drive N/W of Tulsa, blessed to have the resources to afford 2 season tickets, have made 4 of 5 home games, would love to see a 7th game. CUSA champ game, folks no excuses for Houston game, buy a gift and get into the game, we have a winner in Tulsa, why go to Norman Or Stalewater? Go TU!

It's no mystery as to why TU's attendance is sucking pond water! Lack of parking! Why can't TU administrators and planners recognize that? Folks don't care to park in questionable neighborhoods, walk abnormal distances to get to the stadium, then have to reverse that trek - sometimes to a vandalized vehicle! I'm not crippled, but my 65 y.o. legs don't hobble those many blocks like they used to, crossing over busy intersections which have NO extra safety measures in place . I'll go find a good high school game - or stay home and watch Sponge Bob Square Pants on TV - rather than suffer the inconveniences brought about by poor facility planning and development.

I have one way the TULSA World could help TU. Start covering CUSA matchups. You have 10 guys pick 10 college games each week. Every Big 12 game is usually predicted. I can't remember one CUSA game (other than TU games) predicted. That would help create awareness of Tulsa's conference rivals & hopefully draw more fan interest.

Well, my situation is that of many TU grads. I am a professional, living 1,000 miles from Tulsa. I do make at least one game a year, but even if every single living TU grad did the same, it would still take average attendance up only to about 20,000.
I will say this, however. At a very healthy 54 years of age, I don't mind parking at about 18th and Harvard, and walking the 3/4 mile to the stadium to see a game. But I can imagine that that discourages many seniors from even thinking about attending a game.
Once you are in the stadium, unless you are deaf or hooked on anti-depressants, the blaring PA system, playing the worst "music" you'll ever hear in your life, is quite damaging to the nervous system. And it almost never stops, throughout the entire game. Does it never occur to the people at TU that fans have come to the stadium for a football game, not for a sleazy, deafening rap concert?

Tulsan in Exile: I'm not half your age but agree that fans have come to the stadium for a football game, not for a sleazy, deafening rap concert! That is a national problem, even more prevalent at big schools.
If all the TU grads which live within 300 miles came each week, that number wouldn't exceed 20,000.
TU needs to do everything it can to get more Tulsa attendance. Nevertheless, we should be thankful a tiny school has the great history (especially recent!) and has done a great job this year and is in great hands (A TU alumnus who is a local high school coaching legend along with a staff loaded with TU alumni). An average attendance of 22,000 for 2011 is really good, all things considered (horrible weather for OSU game, OU & OSU undefeated through TU's first 5 home games, 1-3 start for TU).
I think Bill Blankenship is helping in a lot of ways. That 1-3 start would normally kill attendance. After losing 2 away games in 2008, attendance plummeted for the next home game.
Tulsan in Exile

You'll get no argument from me, WITW. I think Blankenship has done an absolutely amazing job. This is a hire I was very disappointed with originally. I thought TU was just trying to save a few bucks by going local. But the more I heard of Blankenship, and especially the more I heard players talk about him, the more I became convinced we had hit a "homerun" with this hire. Just imagine what Graham would have done this year with all this adversity. I honestly think Tulsa would be no better than 5-6 right now, just about where Pittsburgh is by the way.

Anyone remember in the old days how youth sports from grade school to high school were promoted to attend TU football games.
Also, TU has no tail gating or prior entertainment. The times TU plays are so scattered no one has any idea of when the games are being played.
TU does not care a whit about their fans. They cater to corporate Tulsa and they don't come to football or basketball games.
Think Tank
(last year)
Make one big game at home, (OSU or OU), a "marque" game. Announce that only season ticket holders can get into the stadium for the "marque" game. The second time your "marque" game comes around, after numerous loud public temper tantrums, the fans will really believe you. They will buy season tickets.
All the OU and OSU fans who bought the season tickets just so they could see the "marque" game will now make sure their remaining tickets won't go to waste. They will offer them to business associates, friends, relatives, church members etc. Now more people are coming to the games to experience Tulsa football. Some will like it enough to buy more tickets and come back again. Alumni will make sure and buy season tickets every year.
The Oklahoma State model actually worked. Study their numbers. There are more season ticket holders today than the previous total capacity of their old stadium. All wearing school colors. Astonishing. More positive experience for everybody, more money for the school, growing fan base. Recruiting improves.
You shouldn't schedule OU and OSU to mark up the ticket prices just for that one game. That is short term thinking. Think long term. What do you really want to accomplish? More TU fans for EVERY game. A growing fan base, not a shrinking one.
