Floppy or Blocky?
Published: 6/22/2012 3:39 PM

Well, that was a fun diversion from OU football wasn't it.

The Thunder needs a lot to compete successfully for an NBA title. OKC is said by the cheerleaders to be all set for years to come. Guess what. Miami is better set. Guess what else. Changes are apt to come all around the league that will greatly alter things.

It appears that the Thunder must keep either Floppy or Blocky, Harden or Ibaka. Floppy would appear to have great trade or "keep" value. Blocky can stand under the hoop and block shots. But he can't really cover anybody out on the floor or score much. The finals appeared to overwhelm Floppy. But he has potential.

Here is what the Thunder needs to win a title.

BETTER COACHING.

It's hard to win a championship without a single play. The Thunder play indoor street ball, plain and simple. Durant and Westbrook are great. the rest of the rotation is debatable.

This is not a league for big, immobile centers. The big guy for the Lakers drags them down. He looks tired every third trip up and down the court. The big guy at Orlando, they can't wait to trade him. You need a long and lean center who can run and jump and block and score.

The Thunder has no inside game.

SLIGHTLY BETTER GM WORK.

Everybody loves the boy-wonder GM. But: The Perkins trade was not the ticket to the title that the cheerleaders thought it would be. Perkins can't score. A number one draft pick was pretty much wasted on the KU center. Help is needed. Let's see this guy's next move.

A BETTER MEDIA

It may be a fine pro hoop team, but it's the same OKC media that has been leading the league in homer behavior since more than a decade back when most of them predicted 11 straight national titles for the Sooners.

Cheerleading is different when it comes to a pro team. It's one for all. Us against them. But along with adoring the home squad comes the responsibility of giving your readers and viewers a realistic idea of what's to come.

Here's something else the Thunder needs.

The Picker to pick them.

We have just completed the greatest underdog trifecta in the history of sports predicting:

The Giants over the Patriots.
Alabama over LSU.
Miami over OKC.

We can't eliminate the bull. But we can lead you through it.

Floppy? And now I know why this guy is a joke. Harden had a bad stretch this series, it happens. But can you seriously say that OKC would not have gotten past the first 3 rounds without Harden? Perkin, I will agree is situational use, not starting. Ibaka would be the better starter. But, to sit here and claim that OKC was a joke is stupid.

Picker, you keep giving me more reasons not to read your articles, the only reason I keep reading them is the train wreck mentality, you want to look away but its so horrific you can't.

This is why the Picker can write an opinion piece and generate all of a half-dozen comments and Bruce Plante can draw a little cartoon and generate several hundred. He continues to spin off deeper into irrelevance.

"The Thunder needs a lot to compete successfully for an NBA title." They were more successful this year than all but one team.

"A BETTER MEDIA" The fact that you think media, good or bad, can affect the performance of any team just shows how sad you've become Picker. Print media in general, and sports print media in particular, could hardly be less relevant.

Seriously? You people dissing Perk are hilarious. Dude was a starter on a title winning team, and his knee injury in the 2010 Finals was THE difference between him but being on not one, but TWO title teams. Perk has never been a scorer so expecting him to magically turn into one in OKC is laughable. He brought a lot more than that to the table, though. I'll admit to not having watched him much since leaving the Celtics so I'll go ahead and concede that it's possible he could have lost a step following his knee injury, thereby affecting his play since he's been in OKC.

The bottom line for OKC is that they play finesse ball in the conference where finesse ball is okay to play (with a few exceptions). The East is where defense and tough ball is played for the most part. I still remember a tweet from Jenni Carlson of the Oklahoman during earlier rounds of the playoffs while she was watching a game in the Heat/Knicks series, I believe. It was an ugly game with a low score in the 3rd. The gist of her tweet was that there was no offense played in the East, and she was glad she covered a team that could play offense in the West. Perhaps the difference is not the offense, but rather the lesser defense played in the West? The bottom line in this series is that Miami was just too physical and honestly, played too much defense for OKC to overcome.

I made this comparison prior to the Finals. The Picker will enjoy this one, I think...

The Western Conference = The Big XII in football, excellent offense with defensive deficiencies

The Eastern Conference = The SEC in football, ugly offense sometimes but defense makes up for it

OKC has to figure out a way to pass Miami without the benefit of having a play to run.

Picker,
You suck... Ever hear it takes a while to learn to win.... What did you say about the HEAT last year? Did they not learn from their experience? The Thunder will be just fine... By the way, don't you have a bass master event to prep for? You third tier media hack.
JG78 (8 months ago)
Razor, the bottom line was not physicality. It was we couldn't figure out Labron. We doubled all day and went with a small line up hoping they wouldn't hit jumpers... Guess what? They did. By the way... each game was a toss up before last night. I argue, their wasn't a big gap between the two teams. You know the gods are looking down on you when you hit a record 14 three's and Mike Miller leads you in scoring. Bottom line. The Heat role players stepped up offensively and ours didn't.

A better media is a bit arrogant. It's about the game not how good or bad the media is. There are valid points with the other things but I still see them as growing. You are right a lot of growing teams only make it to the Finals once.

Wow, Pick...you're up to 9 comments. Another 190 and you'll be up in cartoon territory.

Maybe you just need better media?

Wow Nash, ten more comments from you and you'll be a charter member of the fan club. You're already leading the league.

John Wooden said basketball is about one thing: "field goal percentage". The rest is just talk.

Bart78 (8 months ago)
Using a John Wooden quote as a comment about the NBA seems nonsensical. Picker has it right about "indoor street ball" and I suspect John Wooden, if he were still alive, would not be quite so circumspect in any comment about the NBA. He might not even use the word "basketball" in any NBA comment.

If "ands" or "buts" were "candy" and "nuts",
oh, what a constipated season we'd have!
Interesting year. But....
Don't look for OKC or Miami in the Finals next year.

I always enjoy The Picker because he irritates those like Nash who are so unhappy with Picker they can't wait to read him and then post comments about how unhappy they are with him.

Picker is right about the street ball. OKC has some great individual athletes and the best scorer in the NBA in Durant, but their offense is "one of you guys dribble for 15 seconds and then throw up a shot."

Most telling stat of the finals? La Bron had more assists than OKC's point guard. Fewer turnovers too.

Boulevard, I bet you can't find the last time I responded to one of the Pickers blogs. He has become irrelevant because it's the same old routine. I get it....he hates OKC talk radio....he hates OKC media....he hates anything OU. It's all stale, there's nothing new here....but hey, I guess some people just enjoy reheating the leftovers. Enjoy!

Boulevard is exactly right.

More assists are required.

All NBA fans should watch the current edition of Real Sports with Bryant Gumble. There's an interview with Phil Jackson that is one of the best ever. He comes close to ruling in coaching again. In eliminating the teams he wouldn't waste time on, like the Knicks and Orlando, he does not rule out OKC! He doesn't want to be on "that" side of the country, east. What's left?

The Thunder has no offense beyond individual greatness. And versus Miami, no defense. Is what's left coaching or being a team manager?
