Food for thought

After a few days of teasing us, fall weather is finally here. The crisp cool days and nights with refreshing breeze. The sun-splashed afternoons complete with blue skies. Or the ever depressing gunmetal gray skies that include cold temperatures and occasional precipitation.

I love the fall, not just because of football season, but it’s finally a sign that summer is gone. My backyard this summer looked like the rough at a U.S. Open golf course or the bare, brown patches of a British Open links course depending upon how hot the temperatures got.

My wife Jennifer and I took advantage of these beautiful autumn conditions to have a little fall feast last night. We got the grill fired up and had a little smoked sausage, grilled vegetables, pasta salad and s’mores for dessert that were delicious! Standing out on our back porch while we were grilling got me thinking of all that delicious food fans whip up for their pregame tailgate parties.

Walking through the parking lots to the stadium on game days gets my stomach churning and my taste buds craving. Smelling the aroma from the hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue ribs and brisket, as well as getting a quick peak at them, make me very jealous. Unfortunately, the free pregame meal served in the press box often pales in comparison to those tailgate feasts. Ask my colleague Jimmie Tramel. He wanted no part of the lamb served at Kansas State two weeks ago and made a quick stop at a concession stand for his pregame nourishment.

So don’t be surprised if you see this curious (and hungry) sports writer hanging near your tailgate site in Stillwater the next few weeks.
