Football is Back

Sitting in the press box before Tulsa's opener against Stephen F. Austin on Thursday night gave me time to remember that this is my 30th year, 28th since I came to the Tulsa World in 1978.
It doesn't seem much different. It is warm. Fans are excited about the start of another season.
The coaches and players all think a fabulous season is ahead.
But that's why we keep coming back. You never know what a season holds. Some of the most optimistic predictions have turned into nightmares.
Some of the worst projections turned into memorable seasons.
There are games that stand out but there have been so many it is hard to remember the specifics about many.
Here at Skelly Stadium I've sat through monsoon-type rains with about 200 fans to watch a game. I've been here for packed houses to see the Sooners and Cowboys.
I've seen the student body rush the field to tear down the goal posts after a victory over UTEP (it snapped a 17-game losing streak).
I've been here for some of the biggest upsets – the miracle over Texas A&M and the miracle later in the year in the snow over Southern Miss.
I've seen three future Pro Football Hall of Famers at Skelly – TU's Steve Largent (at TU and in All-State game), OSU's Barry Sanders and OU's Lee Roy Selmon (all-state game).
The best thing about college football at TU is that it is still possible to leave an hour before the game, take a few backroads, stop by a tailgate party of a friend and comfortably be in my press box seat before kickoff.
College football is here again.
