Ford Can Win Over OSU Fans
Published: 4/17/2008 5:06 PM

I hate to keep beating this same drum, when it comes to building excitement for a basketball or football program, but winning overcomes all else.
New Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said all of the right things and hit the right notes in his first press conference in Stillwater.
Now, comes the hard part. To make it work, and heal the wounds of a painful split with former coach Sean Sutton, Ford will have to win games.
If he does, Gallagher-Iba will be rocking once again.
Ford has the credentials and background to make an impact. Plus, Sutton left the Cowboys with a nice core group of players.
But winning in the Big 12 is a hard thing.
If he can win in the Big 12, then reaching the goal of winning the national championship, something he talked about in his first press conference, will be possible.
He may have been the second choice behind Bill Self in the coaching search but he could find himself No. 1 in the hearts of OSU fans every where if he can return OSU basketball to the national stage.

All the talk about this situation is fun but it's now left to Travis to keep the players he has on campus, add one (?) more, and then make the tournament next year. If he can do that and recruit a decent class in 2009 I think he can be a success at O-State. His record next year is crucial. If he stumbles it will be more difficult.

Right on, John! Now if you could only convince Sittler to move on to a new topic...

Why do you say that he was Holders second choice behind SElf? Holder went after Gillespie and he turned them down, he then went after the coach at Southern Illinois and he turned them down, and then he hired FOrd. HOlder is a golf coach and that is about it!

Brad, sorry, you're painfully misinformed. Guess you read the message boards a bit too much. Holder NEVER went after Gillespie. You think we want another coach with a history of alcoholism? YES - that's a good idea!

Lowery at SIU said that he's "not in the running for the OSU job" - he essentially turned down a job that wasn't offered to him.

Get real, grow up, and get over it. Some fans think Holder is doing a great job, and you know you'll be on board next season when Travis has this team playing up to their potential night in and night out. I'm just trying to keep you from looking like a complete fool much longer...

Let's be realistic. His record next year will likely have very little to do with any long term impact on the team. He's playing with a team that has been taught basketball by the Suttons. His style is completely different. This guy needs at least 3 years and more likely 4 before we can at all tell what his full impact as a head coach could/will be. I know waiting a few years isn't what anybody wants to hear but that's reality. He may do very well next year and should receive at least some credit for it. If he does poorly next year he should receive some blame, but not all of either as Sean and Eddie have taught most of these kids and they deserve some of the credit good or bad until Ford has time to establish himself in his own right.

Arthur, playing half court offense and looking for 3's is not that hard to do with even modest athletes. We've seen TU coaches (Including the present one)have success at it. The problem (as Sean found out) is whether the athletes can adjust when they are taken out of that set-up. OSU couldn't handle it. 2 wins on the road! As TU showed in its tourney, its athletes could get away from half court and run if that's what was needed. The real question is whether these athletes at OSU can compete in the "Big" 12 at home and on the road regardless of the "system" This isn't rocket science. I would imagine they will, but watching the inconsistency (usually a sign of coaching problems) they displayed last season it is hard to tell for sure.

Tom,
Inonsistency is usually a sign of youth. Beyond that, Sean tried to push the tempo more than his father did and his father actually had more success in slowing the game and playing physical man-to-man defense. Your TU reference has little bearing on any of this. TU played complete jokes. I am happy being a Tulsa native to see TU win, but really they played a bunch of teams that couldn't even make the NIT. OSU would have done the same if they had played teams at that level. Memphis destroyed Tulsa and many teams in the Big 12 competed with the team that actually beat memphis. Oh yeah, the only other team to beat Memphis lost to a Big 12 teams.

TU was undoubtedly the worst team in Oklahoma this year. I hope this is not always the case, but that's the truth.

With all of that said, what does that have anything to do with this coach deserving 3 or 4 years because Ford's system is different and needs time to recruit his own players? The system you mentioned wasn't Eddie's system at all. Eddie's system was extremely heavy on ball movement to create openings to drive or pass into the post, then if the post was double teamed, move the ball again to the open man(whether that be behind the 3-point line or not). That is not this guy's system it requires more movement from the players and means that your big men have to be more in shape. To transition the team he needs a few years. It will be 3-4 years before we really see how Ford wants to run the offense at OSU. Until then, it will have to be modified to account for players recruited for a different system.

I had mixed emotions about S. Sutton's firing. I believe that E. Sutton left Sean Sutton a train wreck of a program. I sensed early on that things might not go well for Sean Sutton.
I personally would have probably given S. Sutton another year, but who am I? It is Mike Holder, who walks the “hallowed halls” of Gallagher-Iba Arena every day. Holder had to have a better insight than myself and most OSU alum, fans, and other fringe observers who second guess him. It was Holder's responsibility to do what was best for the BB program and to act decisively. The buck stopped with holder and when he was through “bucking”, Sean Sutton was bucked off! I wish Sean Sutton the best. Every OSU fan hoped Bill Self would take the bait and go home, but the fact is that he didn’t. As a result, Holder had to look at other options. I am excited about Ford. He has a unique mix of youth, enthusiasm, and a proven record of taking struggling programs to new heights. In retrospect, Ford seems to be the best man for the job. GO POKES!!!
