And they're off....
The 2009 U.S. Amateur began this morning with a local launch.
Former University of Oklahoma assistant coach Phillip Bryan of Norman hit the first shot off the No. 1 tee at Southern Hills at 7:30 a.m.
The third shot off the No. 1 tee at Southern Hills was hit by Oklahoma State golfer Morgan Hoffmann.
I began walking the course with the second group of golfers to tee off at No. 1. In the group is Sam Saunders, grandson of golf icon Arnold Palmer.
Saunders birdied the first hole. His grandpa once called No. 12 one of the best par fours in the country. I'm waiting to see how the kid fares on that one.

Tulsa World sports writer Jimmie Tramel is a former class president at Locust Grove High School. He graduated magna cum laude from Northeastern State University with a journalism degree and, while attending college, was sports editor of the Pryor Daily Times. He joined the Tulsa World on Oct. 17, 1989, the same day an earthquake struck the World Series. He is the OSU basketball beat writer and a columnist and feature writer during football season. In 2007, he wrote a book about Oklahoma State football with former Cowboy coach Pat Jones.
