From electric football to Booker T. football
Published: 9/2/2009 10:46 AM

I attended a Tuesday night public screening of a new documentary (title: “Hornet Football Excellence”) about Booker T. Washington football, then stuck around for a panel discussion of the film, produced by Booker T. alums Lamar Burks, Dr. Rodney Clark and Gerald Hicks.
How was the documentary received? It’s tough to please all the people all the time, so I was glad for the filmmakers when viewers applauded at the end.
During the forum, it was apparent that the community takes a lot of pride in Booker T. Washington and the school’s athletic pursuits. One of the viewers suggested there should be more viewings because people need to know history -- and the documentary deals with interesting off-the-field issues like integration.
One of my favorite stories in the film came courtesy of ex-Hornet quarterback Melvin Gilliam, who talked about his simple-yet-secret formula for calling audibles during a state championship season.
Newspaper clips, photos, game footage and interviews were used to tell the chronological story of Booker T. football.
Where did all those articles come from? Burks said he has been cutting stuff out of newspapers since he was little. He said he cut out so many articles that his mom bought him an electric football game so that he would quit making messes.
What’s an electric football game? If you had one, you know. If you don’t know (and it certainly wasn’t anything like Madden 2010), then maybe it’s a reminder of why we all need a history lesson every now and then.
