Gameday: Instant Analysis

It's been a fun holiday weekend of college football.
Here are a few things we learned:
1. Neither wind nor rain can keep Oklahoma from its appointed rounds
Long-time observers said Saturday's weather may have been the worst for an OU home game in the last 50 years. But despite the subpar weather and a light holiday crowd, the Sooners delivered a much needed win. This team is certainly a shell of the one that started the season. That, however, didn't stop OU from delivering a workman-like victory over Iowa State and keeping a Big 12 title and a BCS bowl in play.
2. Buckle up for Bedlam
It should be a fun week as we build to Bedlam. Bob Stoops provided some sizzle in the postgame Saturday, digging at Oklahoma State by claiming a victory against the Cowboys should make the Sooners outright Big 12 champs despite the fact it would really create a three-way tie.
Although the stakes aren't as high for Bedlam as everyone thought they might be at midseason, the fact the Big 12 title is on the line will make things very entertaining. OSU needed OU to win Saturday for a couple of reasons. For one, the Cowboys' only chance to play for a national title involves a convincing win over a highly ranked Sooners squad. But maybe more importantly, OSU must beat OU with a title on the line to take the next step as a national program.
Saturday's FX announcing crew talked about the mental edge the Sooners hold over OSU. A win is necessary to change that perception. And frankly, if OSU can't win this season I'm not sure when they will.
3. LSU and Alabama prove a point
LSU and Alabama proved without a shadow of a doubt they are No. 1 and No. 2... in the SEC. Are they the best two teams in the country? Maybe. Unfortunately, enough people think they are that we'll be subjected to a rematch in the BCS title game. No doubt, it will be entertaining. But I'm not a fan of conference rematches in the BCS format. Isn't that what the regular season is for? Shouldn't another one loss team be given the chance to challenge LSU given the fact Alabama couldn't beat the Tigers at home despite numerous scoring chances? That would make sense, but this system doesn't.
4. Tulsa had its chances against Houston
I was glad to attend the Tulsa-Houston game Friday at Chapman Stadium. Congratulations go to Tulsa fans. who did a good job of filling up the stadium to watch the Golden Hurricane take on a top 10 team.
Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship probably went to bed Friday night thinking about what could have been. Two red zone trips in the first half with no points, two field goals in the third quarter and two great throws by UH quarterback Case Keenum on fourth down turned a close game into a rout.
Still, it was a good first year for Blankenship and it has a chance to get better with a bowl game in about a month.

Brutal. All Tulsa has to do is hold onto the ball for five seconds and can't do it.
