If the Picker owned the world, I would:

Fire Nebraska coach Callahan.

Fire everybody who knows him.

Warn OU offensive co-ordinator Wilson. How could that team ever lose a game with Peterson?

Censure anybody not voting for McFadden the Heisman. This guy is another Peterson. The Oregon quarterback will be holding extra points in the pros. The Florida quarterback will be playing center.

Fire Norv Turner.

Bench McNabb.

Fire Dick Vitale.

Fire the officials at the New England-Indy game. Outside of two lousy cross-country pass interference calls, and one dink pass before the half, Indy did nothing. A spot of foul pass interference call remains the most idiotic rule in all of sports. It's the number one cause of unjust winners. It's over, New England is far and away the best and will probably go undefeated.

Censure the Oklahoma State offensive co-ordinator. The defense didn't cost OSU the Texas game. Everybody knows OSU has no defense. So you have to pour on the great offense. In the fourth quarter, on fourth and three, a reverse was called, then on third and ten, a disgusting option! The play-caller choked.

Ignore anybody wanting to fire Nutt at Arkansas. What has that guy done so wrong, anyway? It's not like Arkansas is only a coach away from being elite.

Fire Shanahan.

Fire Keith Olberman and Bob Costas from the repugnant NBC pro football show Sunday nights. Olberman is unwatchable spewing venom on MSNBC. He's as bad using nasty hindsight on sports.

Fire Skip Bayless, who couldn't get anything right using hindsight.

Completely disregard Curly and Moe, or was it Moe and Larry, on Oklahoma City sports talk radio -- Larry, Moe and Curly all sound pretty much alike. Last week, two of them said the perfect hire at Arkansas would be OU assistant Venables! That should be used as a priceless tag line on the credit card commercial. On a list of 50 possible coaches for Arkansas, Venables would be about 102.

Don't fire Aggie coach Franny. Some high school in Oklahoma City could hire him and mildly threaten Jenks and Union.

Picker, when do you think the heat will start being placed on Gundy inside/outside the program?? The local media seems to want to give him a pass and keep stating "he's got the program going in the right direction."It's not like he inherited a mess of a program left behind by Miles. Compare the first 3 years under Miles compared to first 3 years under Gundy. By the way, Miles didn't have a $160 million dollars to work with............I'm thinking Kansas puts a death-nail on the 2007 season.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Disappointed: Good question. The needle is probably on medium warm right now. Another mess or two like Saturday and the reading will be hot.

With world-class facilities like that stadium, great coaches would like up to get the job.

By the way, bad news for OU and OSU -- Frannie just got canned at College Station. Bye bye option. That firing is probably going to make some high school very happy, though.

Hiring these big-shot coaches that flop and have gigantic buy-outs has to stop. Stoops-like assistants make much more sense.

Getting back to OSU-Texas: When underdogs get conservative, they always lose. Happened with OSU versus Longhorns, also Alabama versus LSU. You have to continue full-throttle with what got you there.

Gundy probably has two more years.
OSU Jeff (5 years ago)
Dissapointed,

Since you brought it up, let's compare Gundy/Miles in the first three seasons.

Season one: Miles 4-7, Gundy 4-7; wash

Season two: Miles 7-5, Houston Bowl win over USM; Gundy 7-6, Indy Bowl win over Alabama; wash

Season three: Miles 8-4, Cotton Bowl loss

As for Gundy's season three, the verdict is still out, but he can still match Miles 5-3 mark in Big 12 play with wins over Kansas and Baylor. And we should note that OSU's schedule in Gundy's third year is FAR more difficult than Miles third year.

One thing that Gundy has certainly done better than Miles is set the program up for longer-term success.

Miles brought in a bunch of questionable guys in the 2001-03 time frame, and the team hit the wall in 2004, before crashing and burning in 2005 after Miles bolted.

While much work remains, Gundy has done a good job of taking OSU from - by far - the WORST team in the league in 2005 to a team that can beat any team in the league in 2007.
Dissapointed (5 years ago)
Jeff, I have to disagree with some of your numbers. Miles had 8 victories, counting the Houston Bowl victory much like you counted Gundy's bowl win in his second season. Also, Miles had 9 victories in season 3. Your point about the team hitting the wall in 2004: I think things could have been slightly different if Josh Fields hadn't skip his senior year to play baseball. Considering that Donovan Woods wasn't much of a Division I-A quarterback, and we lost both Rashaun Woods and Tatumn Bell, I thought we had a pretty decent year. I agree with the questionable players brought into the program, though.......I still would have like to have seen what the Pokes would have looked like in '06 & '07 under Miles considering the momentum at the time. Just a thought......

It was the one who called the plays who blew it.
Stoops (5 years ago)
Picker, when do you think you'll start making better picks? Sure glad you were wrong about the "state" school and Texas game. We needed Texas to win that for our S.O.S.!

Are you tootin' McFadden's horn because he rolled South Carolina (remember that time you said: "now that he has switched QB's, Spurriers team could be the best in the country")? Gosh, I didn't think anybody loved the Ol' Ball Coach more than me!

In your last "Top 5", you ranked South Florida and South Carolina #1 and #2 - and they haven't won since, both have gone 0 - 3.

I wanted to ask a favor, for your next ranking, could you please rank Ohio State and either Oregon or LSU in the top 2 spots - that should put an end to their seasons as well! (we can take care of Kansas ourselves, if Missouri doesn't)

Thanks Picker - glad to hear you love OUr program!

We?
What'd you do, have a flat tire outside Norman?
That your "we" connection.
Doesn't switching names so often make you dizzy?
We all know who you are; and still don't like you.
Stoops (5 years ago)
Oh come on buddy, whaddaya say? Help us out, we need it! I'm just kidding anyway, there's no harm in having your top 2 teams go 0 - 6 since you ranked 'em.

Don't know about the name switching, only thing that makes me dizzy is watching your picks swirling down the toilet with the STOOLwater (just kidding - you know I love ya man).

I don't know about the name switching - but you sound like the expert, so I'll leave it to you!

I'm Bob Stoops and I approve this message.

OSU Jeff (5 years ago)
Dissapointed:

Fair points - I was doing the records those years off the top of my head.

Also, I agree somewhat about Fields, but that plays somewhat to my point about OSU under Miles being somehwat of a house of cards. The very fact that we had to rely on D. Woods is my point. Going into year 4 under Miles, the only capable QB we had on campus is now a linebacker/safety. We had no quality depth anywhere - that's why we crashed and burned in '05.

Look at the QB position now - we 3 or 4 highly recruited guys on campus and another on the way for next year.

Also - you have to conceed that if Gundy had Miles' non-conference schedule from 2003, OSU would be sitting at 7-2 right now and poised for an equal or better season than Miles had in '03.

I'm not saying all is well - the defense is still awful... but things are also not as brutal as some are stating.

Again - OSU still has a very good shot at going 5-3 in conference. That is quite a turnaround from 1-7 in '05.

Picker:

Agree that the playcalling was somewhat... questionable in the 4th. The reverse on 4th and 3 was the most egregious example.

However, doesn't it seem somewhat nitpicky to complain about playcalling after the offense rolls up nearly 600 yards?

I still lay 90% of the blame for the loss on the defense. With a 21-point lead and about 10 minutes left, all you need is 1 stop out of 4 tries... a 25% stopping rate shouldn't be too much to ask any defense - even OSU's sieve-like group. Instead, we got 0%.

P.S. On a note related to the aforementioned reverse... why does OSU continue to run Bowman on these reverse plays? He's never struck me as particularly FAST or shifty... It seems to me the best thing to do with Bowman is throw a short passes to him and let him drag tiny DBs 10 yards down the field at a time.

How about we run that reverse with freshman Dez Bryant, who has the makings of a superstar - quick, powerful, great hands and can ALSO carry DBs down field.

Where's the logic saying that voters should give the Heisman to the Oregon quarterback because he'll holding extra points in the pros and the Florida quarterback will be playing center? Last time I checked the Heisman was given to college's football best player, not who may have the best pro career. Using your logic, Jason White shouldn't have even been considered the year he won and Tom Brady, L.T. and Peyton Manning should have the Heisman in their trophy case.
Not Always Right (5 years ago)
This latest blog entry confirms my suspicions that Picker had a very unhappy childhood and was at some point badly scorned in his quest for a job covering the Sooners. I'm sorry it turned out like this, Picker. But there's still time to turn your life around and make it into a positive. Always keep on the sunny side of life. Firing folks does nobody any good.
Jim (5 years ago)
I hear a lot of fire Gundy talk but I haven't heard any names for a new coach. Maybe Mike Stoops or another Stoops assistant, Cale Gundy? I hate to burst the Gundy haters bubble but he will be as good as any coach they have had and will get offers from other schools in 5-7 years.
Danny (5 years ago)
Picker, I agree with you on most things, but you forgot to fire a few more:
The entire Monday Night Football crew -- well, maybe not Mike Turico, but Jaws and Kornheiser?! Who the heck is picking this crew, the Marquis de Sade?
Kornheiser has the face for radio and the voice for the hard of hearing.
They're painful to watch and hear -- the double whammy.

Gundy and Fedora lost the game like you said. Even my 13 year old son said that a 21 point lead was not going to hold up to a conservative, fourth quarter, time-burning slow down by the Pokes offense.
OSU's only defense is it's good offense.
You'd have thought the coaching staff would have learned that after the Aggie meltdown, but NOOOOooooooooo.
Hopefully, someone will remind Fedora before each game from here on out that we cannot rely on our defense to stop a sink, much less a KU team that's firing on all 8.
As far as Miles was concerned, he did sign some problem children at OSU and LSU. Look at how he's handled the Ryan Perrilloux (sic) multiple arrests incidents at LSU. I think Miles learned one thing from Stoops and that's how NOT to discipline a gansta...at least not one that's a star. Get a 2nd or 3rd stringer and watch the axe fly. That's one tough coach.
I'd love to see Miles and Stoops go head to head now with equal talent. Stoops wouldn't stand a chance. Since when has Stoops beaten anyone he wasn't supposed to in the post season?
Actually, when has Stoops beaten anyone in the post season? Oh, right. OU plays for championships....but they sure don't win 'em.
Watch for OU and Texas losing to TT.
Pokes will knock KU from the ranks of the unbeaten.
I still think OSU can win out. I believe. Go Pokes!!
Sid (5 years ago)
Oh Danny boy - in 2005, with a freshman QB, Stoops took a 22nd ranked (7-4) Oklahoma team to the Holiday Bowl and beat a 12th ranked
(10-1) Oregon squad.

Thanks for playing, and we have some lovely parting gifts for you...
Biscuit (5 years ago)
Even better, going into the game Oregon was ranked #6 and Oklahoma was unranked.
To: Danny

I read that the Stoolwater fans were holding up four fingers Saturday...to signify the number of years of jail time their LB will get for sexual assault conviction.
I also understand that said LB will miss practice in Stoolwater this week because he has to attend his felony assault trial. You mean, he is still on the team???
Is all of this true??? If so, then, why would you even mention any other team and its discipine of its players.
Some of us get a real laugh hearing you OSwhooers say you are going to 'win out' everytime you lose a game.
And, finally, at least Stoops takes his team to a BCS bowl-a place the Stoolwater crowd just reads about.
ps. Nice game against Texas. Great coaching. I can see why you critiicze other teams coaches what with OSU's world class coaching display Saturday. Keep up the good work, Danny, you are a real genius.

How could Vikings ever lose a game with Peterson?

Weren't you the one who said, and I quote: "Texas stinks"? Yep, it was you. I looked it up.

Where I was right: OSU SHOULD beat Texas
Where I was right again: History is NOT for losers when handicapping football-to wit: OSU v. Texas.

Where you were wrong: OSU will beat Texas.
Where you were wrong again: History is for losers when handicapping football-to wit: OSU v. Texas.

Danny, you're right, the Monday night stuff is the worst ever.....you see the game next Monday, it's SF at Seattle! The worse the game, the more they talk.

And NIT PICKER continues to not get the joke... what a surprise.

Boy, NIT PICKER, you sure are "showing" The Picker, aren't you?

Allow me to let you in on something: you represent everything that The Picker makes fun of every week.

The super-serious fan who takes himself and his team oh so seriously.

And here is the punchline: your continued attempts to "slam" the Picker in every single blog just make you look more foolish.

Congratulations on CONTINUING to not get the joke...

Hey, W-Picker:

If McFadden is the first offensive player picked in next year's NFL draft, should he send a thank-you card to Peterson? Maybe split the cash Peterson didn't get?

WorldPicker - I finally agree with you about something, and I took the same approach. One would think the talented folks at the Tulsa World could figure out a way to require registration and unique usernames/passwords in order to post.

Having said that, OSU Jeff - what's the difference in agreeing or disagreeing with what The Picker writes? You constantly point out that NIT Picker isn't "getting the joke" because he argues with The Picker, are you also not getting the joke because you support everything The Picker says? If the joke is about the "super-serious fan who takes himself and his team oh so seriously", aren't you at least one cheek of that butt? Your in-depth analysis of Oklahoma State games and your "slams" on a fan of your team's biggest rival kind of makes you the pot to NIT Picker's kettle - no?

Anyway, now that I've posted I'm sure there's soon to be some nonsensical drivel on the way with my name on it. Kindly disregard, it's sure to be juvenile, unoriginal, and completely unrelated to any discussion.
