It was 20 years ago that Barry Sanders won a Heisman Trophy while at Oklahoma State and it really was a generation ago. Just ask redshirt freshman Jared Glover.
Glover, 19, was asked about his favorite Barry Sanders memory during OSU's football media day. Glover said he really didn't have one because Sanders was before his time.
Wow. That will make you feel old.
But OSU coach Mike Gundy said the Cowboys are still reaping recruiiting benefits from being "Barry Sanders' school" even though Sanders is long gone.
"Most of the time, guys that are as far removed as (Sanders) is, you bring him up in recruiting and (prospects) don’t have any idea who the guy is," Gundy said. "But not with him. They still know who he is."
Evidence? Gundy said he has a 6-year-old son who plays tackle football. The son wanted jersey No. 12 and it was unavailable, so he got jersey No. 21 instead. Mom suspected the son got 21 because it was 12 in reverse. Nope. "I want it because it’s Barry Sanders’ number," the son explained.
Of course, factor in that dad used to hand off to Sanders.
"I made him what he is today," joked Gundy.
