Ginger or Mary Ann?

I said it multiple times yesterday and I will say it again in cyber print: The onside kick verdict in the Oregon-Oklahoma game may have been the worst judgment call since Thurston Howell's wife won the beauty pageant on "Gilligan's Island." Thurston's wife is a nice lady, but, hey, she's no Ginger or Mary Ann.

Back to football: A ref guessed in regard to who recovered the onside kick. That's the only explanation that seems possible for awarding Oregon possession as OU's Allen Patrick was walking off the field with the football. Officials should never, ever guess. Because one of the refs guessed, replay official Gordon Riese is catching eight kinds of heck for not correcting the mistake.

Riese doesn't deserve to shoulder all the criticism and I felt bad for him when I read this morning that he and family members have been barraged with hateful phone calls, even a death threat.

Riese is considering giving up his job. I hope he doesn't. Everybody makes mistakes. But you shouldn't let a mistake dictate the course of your life. Move on. Do better. And I have yet to see a football game that is worthy of a death threat.

I received this in an e-mail today from a friend: "When I covered LSU, I wrote something disparaging, and received two death threats. It can shake you up. What a wacky world we live in when Boren and his ilk are that concerned with an official's call. It's funny, but he wasn't yapping two weeks earlier, when an official's call
went in OU's favor and helped them secure a win over UAB. Sad, sad, SAD commentary ..."

Was it "just another football game". Yes. Try telling that to the 60 players wearing the crimson and cream. In the grand scheme of things, football is an ant in a colony. BUT, does that mean we shouldn't correct the blatant mistakes people make? Of course not. Baseball is just baseball...but Pete Rose got the death penalty. I am sick and tired of people comparing these blown calls to recent "bad calls"...THERE IS NO COMPARISON. Ask anyone...the actions that those officials took in Eugene on Saturday were the worst in college football history...period. They were nothing short of blatant. You will never convince me otherwise. Now, do the officials deserve a prison sentence? Of course not. But only a one game suspension?? PLEASE. If this is the maximum penalty (which would be needed to fit the crimes), then what will stop future referees from being impartial (and these were)? Do most officials have integrity? Yes...but not all of them. It's the same with players...most of them are honest, but one or two will take the $$$ and point shave. People who think that officials can't be corrupt are just naive. What I saw Saturday was corruption...at least two grown men (head ref and replay ref) getting caught up in the crowd noise and the situation and decided to cheat for their beloved "local team". INEXCUSABLE. I WAS a big college football fan. It took me several weeks to get past the blown INT in the '84 OU-UT game...then nearly 2 months to forget last seasons OU-Tech game. Both of these were bad...but at least they were judgement calls. After this fiasco, which was absolutely blatant, I have lost all faith that college football is the last team sport free of corruption.

I am not buying the death threat claim. It's too easy to claim that he has recieved death threats. I feel that it's his way to get some sympathy. I will need positive proof before I buy that deal.

It's too easy to make such a claim while hiding behind an Echo. Without positive proof, you should not make such an irresponsible statement.

Dan, I am Echo...I do not feel that I made an irresponsible statement. I was stating my opinion. I will need proof that he was threatened before I buy it. From other articles I have read concerning this situation...Reise is telling one thing, the Pac10 is telling another concerning whether he had proper views of the play in which to make the correct call. I personally think that Reise is hoping for sympathy and I'm not feeling very sympathic right now. It's my opinion and opinions are like bellybuttons, everybody has one.

Lana, I appreciate you coming out of the shadows. I guess neither of us will ever know what is in the heart and mind of the ones who made such a grievous error. I moan over mistakes made against my team too but it would do us all well to try to put sports and life into proper perspective.
