Golf Surprises

The last two blogs and responses about of all things golf turned out interesting.

The main point to emerge is: Just how bad Tiger's competition is.

Think Arnie in his prime could have taken Rocco?

Somebody like Player would have scared Philly Boy back into his hot tub.

Even Johnny Miller was tons tougher than Tiger's group of Euro mush (Sergio) and sissies with their sports therapists.

Tiger may in fact be the best ever -- he needs to win more majors than Jack, plain and simple -- but it will because of his dad and his own guts, not because of the competition.

Why is this group so soft?

Els? Davis Lovey Dovie? VJ?

Even people like Hale Erwin would have used them for caddies.

Erwin? Learn how to spell picker

So many stats are available now such as avg drive distance, greens reached, fairways reached, etc. that it isn't that difficult to compare some old time golfers to the current crop. Just remember that redesigned, longer courses come into play often today. Even with new equipment it is debatable if Hagen, Jones, Hogan, Snead or Nelson could hit the ball far enough to make up the difference. The only true way to compare old/new is how much better than contemporaries an individual performs. Woods is to golf what Ruth was to baseball or Gretzky to hockey.

How can somebody be the best ever as a result of defeating the worst ever?
MIKE (5 years ago)
This is a very tough issue that no matter how it's argued can not be answered. Maybe Tiger can't hit the ball with the equipment they used back in the day. Then again, maybe Tiger is just so good that he makes the other competitors look like they are that bad. Throw in the ever-changing courses and there are just too many variables to know for sure. Maybe we should just ask Jack or Arnold who they think the best is? If they say Tiger, let it be.

You know Jack isn't going to say Tiger is better.

The strangest angle of it all is why, on the whole, this crop of contending PGA golfers more or less stinks.

The guys coming out of college all look the same, nobody has an edge. The Europeans come to school here and then act as though they hate us in Ryder Cup stuff, they only play well in pitch and putt alternate shot mumbo jumbo.

Talk about a dead zone. Without Tiger, the tour will get roller derby ratings.

Another possibility is: Maybe Tiger is so good he turned them all into mush.

Good final point, WP. Maybe he has dominated the sport in such a way that he has demoralized them all to rubble. I can see that easily comparing to other teams in the 90's playing Michael Jordan played. It seemed like he too would demoralize teams into a such a rutt that they almost believed they couldn't win before they even played him and the Bulls.

Are you kidding? I do believe most readers get the gist of your blog, but this makes no sense

If you mean to say that TW's dad trained him from an early age to be mentally tougher than his opponent, and that this appears to have separated him from the pack, significantly, then I agree.

You have no idea how difficult it is to say I agree with you. However, I am mentally prepared to do so.
