There's a reason why baseball has been replaced by football as America's pastime -- college and pro football, both.

What will the ratings be for the World Series matching the Tampa Ray Bays versus the Philies, about the same as the numbers for the show about the disgusting Atlanta housewives?

Here's the reason why baseball is so difficult to watch.

Spitting.

The trend in baseball coverage on TV is extreme close-up. In high-def, you can see everything that flies out of one of those slob's mouths. One pitcher for the Tampa Ray Bays spits about 10 times between throws.

The dugouts make the floors at movie theaters seem like surgery rooms by comparison. Clean-up crews must wear waders into the dugouts.

The mouths of baseball players need to be censored, not for words, for stuff.

I have found in my many years of watching sports on television that these things are a given:

Basketball players perspiring profusely.

Football players grass stained and bloody.

Baseball players grabbing their crotch...and SPITTING with the speed of a Tommy gun.

Dear Picker:

Well, I'm here to take my medicine, re: OU/TX. The long delay is attributable to vacation - just got back - a guy's gotta get away every once in a while. While you weren't right about OU straight up, you were more accurate than me. So I'll take two slices of humble pie, please.

However, and I'm sure this will fall upon blind eyes, I was right that no matter who won, it would be by more than 7 points. I think I recall informing you that 10 points was a more accurate spread, no matter who is favored.

Yep. That's fine.

This is actually a good blog, by the way. It is your best work yet, IMHO. But don't think I (or anyone else) like you yet.

The whole point is to not like the picker. He's supposed to be sarcastic and arrogant. From the actions of talk radio I would say it worked. Reading the picker is still better than reading much of the news from that "other" newspaper.

Remember The spitting scene in the Police Story (i think thats the name) movie with Leslie Nielsen and OJ. that's what i thought of while watching one of the ALCS games last week. Gross is right!

The movie to which you refer is "Naked Gun" and I think the Picker is forgetting that Baseball is America's Favorite pastime, not favorite sport to watch on T.V. There is a reason why an overwelming number of Americans played little league baseball or atleast remember going out to play catch with their Dad, and that is, it is just what Americans do. The spitting, well it is one of the many reasons most of us prefer to watch it live and not on T.V.

Alright Licker,
It's been a minute since I last had the 'priviledge' of chatting at you. I wish I had time to respond to all the stupid things I've read here on your last few blogs (reader responses included), but I don't have time. No one has that much time.
But I will tell you the reason most people simply do not care about baseball anymore. It's because they are overpaid cheaters and liars. If they would just allow all of them to use steroids we could accept it and just watch the long balls fly. Instead we get lying and whining. Not to mention a boring sport. Let's hope the World Series is a sweep.

Cyco, welcome back after your lovely wager that OU would win a national championship.

You ready to pay off?

The most entertaining thing about baseball was watching the Angels relief pitcher come out and fall over every time he threw a pitch. But now the Angels are out of it. Therefore I change the channel to something more entertaining. Ping pong, anyone?

Baseball needs two things, hot cheerleaders and a clock.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Vern, you should be the new commish.

I tried to watch game one of the WS last night, it's like a national tranquilizer.....

Picker, your right on about the close-up spitting in baseball, disgusting. But why are you so hard on Dr. Lou? He has some good info like the spread is really the old single wing. you wing it all the time yourself.....
World Picker (4 years ago)
Jim, quarterbacks in the single wing couldn't throw a lick.

Dr. Lou should address his own coaching scandals before preaching to others.
