Guerrero gives OSU hoops team another QB option

Point guard issues contributed to Oklahoma State winding up in the NIT instead of the NCAA Tournament this season. You can’t put this entirely on point guards, but the Cowboys rank 320th nationally (out of 336 Division I teams) in assists.

Fred Gulley underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. Ray Penn went from backup to starter to seldom-used reserve to looking for a new school. And Reger Dowell went from the end of the bench to late-season starter.

It’s apparent that coach Travis Ford, an old floor general himself, doesn’t want to get caught without a quarterback again.

Ford got a commitment Monday from Cezar Guerrero, a 6-foot point guard from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif. Guerrero ranks among the top players at his position in the class of 2011, according to recruiting services.

Assuming OSU has no defections, Guerrero will be thrown into the mix next season with Dowell and a healthy Gulley. Coaches like to say nothing brings out the best in a player like competition for playing time. The quarterback derby should prove interesting.

Jimmie, Guerrero is definitely good. Extremely fast and handles the ball like it's on a yo-yo. The only negative I see is that he tends to get too flashy at times but I think Coach Ford will temper that.

With that said, I think he's going to have to do A LOT to overtake Reger Dowell. That kid just gets better and better each game he plays. He still needs to do a better job of taking care of the ball but I think he's going to be the #1 guy going into next year with Gulley and Guerrero battling for the backup spot.

will be plenty of guard minutes for page, guerrero, gulley and dowell. m. brown will probably have to play small 3 with olekemi since TF is already talking about using cobbins and nash in lineup. franklin/b. williams will have to serve as 4-5 support (without offensive capabilities) since shaw is apparently totally out of favor. to have offense will have to have other 3 spots filled by guards at all times.
