Gundy Goes Bush League
Published: 8/24/2009 5:59 PM

Banning the unbiased media from the Oklahoma State football program is wrong for many reasons.

One, it's dumb.

Players deserve publicity.

The public deserves information.

University web sites are public relations mush and are worthless.

Next, locking down practice could lead to gambling trouble. Gambling on college football games is perfectly legal in Las Vegas and will soon be legal in Delaware. The only way to regulate gambling is to keep everything fair and open. If only a select few have what could be inside information, who knows what kind of a mess that could cause.

Of course, it's hard for a team to act like it's been to the big time if it hasn't.

so because people want to bet on the game, gundy should open up more?

Pick...Im just curious, but when do coaches base anything about their programs around what vegas does or thinks?

Just let me say "What a load of crap".

Unbiased media???!!! Have you ever read an article by Bill Hasten???  How he ever got to be the OSU beat writer is beyond me......

No, Delaware Court says "no" to gambling.

By far the best line I've read in a very long time

I like the fact that teams are moving this way...there are far too many distractions these days for 18-23 year olds with a reporter in their face everyday asking about expectations for the season.
pokesn09 (3 years ago)
Gee, i wonder what better-to not make it to the "Big Game", or CHOKE!!!! once you get there. The Pokes can move beyond "OU's bigtime", and come into our own, thanks!

Haha, I should have guess you would write something of such an immature nature, Pick.

So Gundy closing the gates to journalists not employed by OSU is bush league but your pouting and thinly veiled spin work isn't? Don't give us this nonsense about "the players deserve publicity and the public deserves information."

You are throwing temper tantrum because he is doing the right thing for his team which at the same time disables you from getting a story.

I am a HUGE OSU fan. I love to hear about what is going on. But would I sarcifice getting daily reports if it meant our team was more prepared come Sept. 5th? Absolutely.

Players need to buckle down and keep their heads where they should be. They don't need the press blowing up their egos. Injury reports do not need to be flying around and asked about every single time someone has a pen and pad in hand.

And you're right, OSU is not big time yet. But with this move, I think they are preparing to move closer.  If you don't agree, so what? You're a blog writer. The OSU football program will live without you.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Secrecy leads to a team being better prepared? Here's the way a good team works. You can line up and say we're running right over you and then it runs over you. USC lets anybody at most of its practices, anytime. All the strange little actions mean something people. Usually it's negative. Gundy doesn't watch his team play defense and then declares war on the media?OK. We'll see.

OSU has several big games a year, OU and Texas to name two. They manage to CHOKE on both.
Golden Hurricane (3 years ago)
This is just another example of terrific and accurate writing by the picker.  Why do these people take things so personally??  The picker is 100% correct on this issue folks, if you can't accept or understand that, you may be slow!
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Yeah Pick, use USC as a stellar example of how a football program should conduct itself (rolling eyes).

You have no idea why he closed the gates so please stop pretending like you do. It's childish and a little pathetic to see a grown man pout.

Buster, your incredible insight astounds us all. Tell me, did that crystal ball of yours lead you to the McDonalds you are currently employed with?

Aww, Golden Hurricane has a crush! That's so cute! Run along now. That Picker collage isn't going to make itself!
OutPickMyNose (3 years ago)
Tattoo,

This is odd, I actually agree with you completely on this issue.

Now, don't think this will be a regular pattern.

Indeed, does it matter if a coach holds private practice? It is a coaches job to coach, not to kiss the reporters (Sittler) butts.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Attention circus clowns on break: If your coach declares war on the media for no halfway decent reason whatsoever, then you can never, ever, once, say that: OU gets more coverage than we get.

Excellent post Picker!

Meximike; YES, you too!

Picker's doing his job folks.  Sitr people up.  He pokes OU's ant hill, swirls his stick around, siwtches to OSU.  Rinse, repeat.

You know...that last line was a bit of cheap shot, but it's true.  We haven't been there before. These players haven't been there before.  Seems to me it's a very smart move to keep their eyes on the prize.  Keep them away from the vultures until the season starts. By that time, they will have too much on their plate (school, practice, games) to worry about what a sooner fan with a journalism degree says about them.  That last comment was not necessarily intended for the Picker.  He may like to bash, but he does it to everyone....not just to those in orange.  It's pretty pathetic that we get fairer coverage by regional and national media than those in our own state.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Coverage equals access.

It would appear that some of the "guys" are getting to you Picker when you feel you have to answer them. You need to say what you believe and ignore the sad comments. Nothing you can say in answer to the wise cats will make a difference because they know it all. Just ask them.
DanDDiver (3 years ago)
Hey, Picker. If Gundy feels that the media is a distraction to his team's preparation, then screw you and your poor, precious blog.

It's about getting the right start for OSU -- not about you, jerkoff.
Who gives a care what you think.

It's OSU's team. It's Gundy's team. Not the Tulsa World or OUklahoman's team.
In fact, the OUklahoma is just chomping at the bit for an OSU failure so they can heap more negative publicity on OSU and promote the Swooners (it is a Gaylord publication and OU Sports Information outlet).

Gundy and most of us OSU fans feel that the Oklahoma media is overly biased, so, once again, SCREW YOU media types.

We OSU fans get better, more professional OSU coverage from media outlets outside the state of Oklahoma in the first place.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Dan, artfully done, congrats.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
