Gundy versus the media
Published: 9/2/2006 5:33 PM

Why is Mike Gundy so concerned with media coverage of his football team?

Since he became OSU's head coach, Gundy has significantly decreased the availability of Cowboy players. As of next week, players are available for interviews only on Mondays and during postgame press conferences.

Reporters are not allowed to watch practice. Gundy's predecessor, Les Miles, had a relaxed media policy. He allowed reporters to watch all or part of most practices.

For years, OSU officials and fans have complained that OU football gets more media play. OSU's smart move would be to become more media-friendly. Instead, Gundy is making it increasingly difficult to cover the Cowboys. It makes no sense.

Every minute that Gundy is focused on media matters is a minute he did not spend on the coaching of his team.

Miles allowed players to be interviewed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Also, it should be noted, Miles beat the Sooners twice and took three Cowboy teams to bowl games.

Mr. Haisten,

I have no idea why Coach Gundy would institute this policy unless he feels it increases concentration.

But reading your next to last paragraph I'm confused--will Gundy have to do more media dealing than otherwise with limited player interviews? Did they used to substitute for talking with the coach, or supplement it? I can't see the new policy increasing Gundy's need to deal with the media beyond what it already is, but I may not be getting it...

Anyway, I thought it was time somebody put a comment onto the blog spots!

Go Pokes,

Hugh
