Gymnastics Rules Every Four Years
Published: 8/19/2008 10:25 AM

If gymnastics is so popular every four years at the Olympics, why doesn't it translate to being popular all of the time?
It is a question I've thought about quite often over the years.
Yes, women's gymnastics is a huge ratings grabber during every Olympics. NBC loves it, as it should.
Except for Michael Phelps' surge to eight golds, women's gymnastics remains the big ticket item at the Olympics.
But why doesn't gymnastics translate to being popular all of the time?
If people love watching it during the Olympics, why don't they watch it every year?
If it so popular, why isn't there a major league gymnastics league with a regular season?
It is one of those baffling questions in sports.
So, we love the gymnastics every four years. See all of you qymnastics fans in 2012.
Until then, back to football.

It's played up real big because women watch it, pure and simple. Same with figure skating in winter olympics. Ratings go up, ad sales geared to gender specific open up for only time during sports events that are other than beer and car spots. Personally, I would rather see ADULTS performing athletic endeavors than pubescent or pre-adolescent stretching and tumbling exalted as a great sport. I equate it more with JonBenet type "beauty contest" closer to pedophilia and/or other child abuse than real sport.

You could ask the same question about track and field.

Dang Tom, you're sick if you think about it that way!
