Half-price college football tickets! Not.

A merger between the Big 12 and Pac-10 makes business sense, but I really can’t embrace it because I happen to value things like loyalty and tradition.

Call me a sucker, but I don’t think you do something just because someone offers to pad your wallet.

Would you leave your spouse or sell out co-workers if someone offered you $100,000? Granted, your options become limited if your spouse (that means you, Missouri and Nebraska) starts flirting with the neighbor.

But everything, even a big dollar megaconference deal, comes with a price and the price for this one will be paid by Average Joe, who won’t be able to get in his car and travel to conference road games played in another time zone.

The alternative is that Average Joe stays home and watches his favorite former Big 12 team on television, but Average Joe might have to stay awake until midnight or 1 a.m. to see the end of a game that doesn't kick off until 9 p.m. central time.

However, I can reluctantly get on board with a merger if schools possibly departing the Big 12 will make this concession to Average Joe: Because schools stand to earn millions more than ever before from TV contracts, ticket-buying fans no longer need to be held hostage. Therefore, the price of tickets to all home games should be immediately halved.

Will that ever happen? Never.

There’s a difference between a fantasy league and a fantasy world.
