He who helps himself

If you stayed up late enough to watch the end of the Lakers-Rockets playoff game Wednesday, you saw Kobe Bryant throw a pass to himself and convert the pass (off the backboard) into a basket.
It was an incredibly athletic hustle play and, yes, Bryant should be complimented for being resourceful.
But the fact that a guy would throw a pass to himself also is an example of why it's not easy for Kobe-bashers to cross the divide and become a Kobe-lover.
You survey the landscape and the best option is throwing a pass to yourself? No one else was open? Throwing a pass to yourself is about the most selfish thing you can do. Will an NFL quarterback try this? Actually, Vince Young should because he could do something the ball after catching it.
Today, some kid in a gym is going to try the pass-to-yourself thing because he saw Kobe do it on television. And then he's going to do it in a game because it will be a way of drawing attention to himself. And basketball will continue to devolve into something that resembles personal one-upsmanship instead of a team sport.
