Heard the One About Texas Tech?
Published: 6/5/2008 3:40 PM
Last Modified: 6/5/2008 3:40 PM

In numerous pre-season football polls, which should be outlawed, Texas Tech is rated in the top 15.

It is even listed in several top tens.

Now, everybody knows that the Big 12 is no quarterback league, and that Texas Texh is playing what was formerly known as a "Kansas State schedule," and is currently known as a "Kansas schedule." It has to win 8 or 9.

Leach has done a brilliant job in Holly Town. His four-yard and a cloud of dust passing game completely befuddles most Big 12 teams, a conference that hasn't put a good thrower in the NFL since 1960-something or other, right? And which of the current crop of so-called brilliant Big 12 throwers will make it as high draft picks in the pros? None of them, that should be easy to remember.

But Tech's true value as a national contender is reflected by Leach's lack of job offers elsewhere: he's fabulous in Lubbock, but beyond, it's a different world.

Tech has taken off the pressure in one regard, it is destined to be the nation's most overrated.

When I read your blogs it's usually to find some silly comment you've made to pick on. After all, that's how you make your lunch money, isn't it? But this time you've made one observation that is absolutely unassailable: if Leach were the Svengali head coach he's perceived to be by those less schooled, he'd be pacing the sidelines at South Bend or Tuscaloosa.

Actually will agree with you on this one. What, Tech plays defense now? Because they did against OU without Bradford?

Please.

If they didn't have Crabtree, they would be a marginal Top-25 team.

Until Texas Tech plays SOLID defense, and I don't mean against Baylor or Sul Ross State, they will win a few games with just their offense, but they WILL NOT EVER win a Big 12 title. I know they have gotten better players than they've probably ever had in Lubbock right now overall, but, we can all agree...defense still wins championships, and defense is as scarce as trees in Red Raiderville.

A little insider info here...word has it from inside the OU program that the defense coaches who work for Venables are beginning to express their dissatisfaction to friends. One such coach has recently stated that Venables has no 'philosophy.' Take it for what it's worth.

I live and work about 3 hrs from Lubbock, most of my co workers are TT grads. It is hilarious to hear them talk of winning a National Championship this year. Lets ot forget that Texas Tech defense that gave up something like 350 yds in the SECOND half to OU's back up QB. The only reason tech won was a marginal call on the 4th down TD catch/not a catch call and the total lack of discipline on the offense and specail teams. How many yards of penalties & big plays called back were there? TONs! every play, nearly every down in the 2nd qrtr.

Leach has been given interest by other schools, however when they find out he makes 2 million a year in Lubbock they are not interested. They are looking for a cheap deal and dont realize the BIG 12 salary scale. Defense for Tech can come with proper coaching, (improper coaching see Lyle Sentenich) at least to give the O a chance to win EVERY game. However, the real reason Tech will not win the BIG 12 is because Leach is not acting like a Head Coach but merely the O/C. And JJ, I have not heard any Tech fans living in reality state they are hoping for a N.C., Big 12 Champ I'll give you that.

Wow, JJ, you wouldn't happen to be an OU fan would you? Funny how not one part of the blog has anything to do with OU yet you found a way to reference last year's loss to TT....sour grapes anyone?

Mike:
Please have whoever reads to you re-read this issue. You have obvioulsy missed the entire point of it - resuling in your foolish remarks to JJ.

Re Venebles having no "philosophy". How far behind can you be, Big Dog? Everyone in the known world knew this when Bo Pelini left. Get a TV set with cable for crying out loud.
BTW-Nixon resigned.

If World Picker believes pre - season FB polls should be outlawed, isn't commenting on them a bit hypocritical?

Taco Tech may or may not be overrated. Only the actual playing of the games will determine.

Nonetheless, if World Picker is saying Leach may be at his highest college coaching level, then it is a point that must be given serious consideration.

Arrrrgh, we agree.
