Herbstreit Slights TU Big-Time
Published: 9/15/2009 2:49 PM
Last Modified: 9/15/2009 2:49 PM

This morning (Tuesday)on the early Sports Animal radio show beaming out of Oklahoma City, ESPN college football poster boy Kirk Herbstreit came on the air and treated TU's football team like a glorified frat squad, saying that this week OU had a "gimmie."

Talk about typical Little 10 snobbery -- OU is only a 15-16-point favorite!

A gimmie is something a child could accomplish, a four-inch putt at golf; a gimmie is a task a dunce could complete, competing in a hand of Texas Hold 'Em with four aces. A gimmie is dunking a Nerf ball on a coat hanger hooked to a closet door. Tabbing somebody as the giver of a gimmie is at the height of disrespectfulness.

Sure, OU could cover the point spread against TU.

But why downgrade a small school's effort against a mighty monster beforehand?

It's what ESPN's college football people seem to enjoy.

Please be sure and study Thursday's Pick column carefully, as there is an important announcement included.

We'll see kirk...we'll see. I saw landry jones go 18-32 and throw apick against Idaho state and at least two more should have beenintercepted. I would hope that if Idaho State can pick him off, Tulsacan a couple times.

Has Kirk Herbstreit even seen TU play this year?  I'm  not guaranteeing a TU victory, nor predicting one...but I do know that the game will not be a "gimme" and if OU comes into the game thinking that, they will get beat.  TU is as good as BYU defensively this year and the blitz packages combined with OU's inexperienced (and sometimes unfocused) offensive line should give Landry Jones fits.  Yes OU looked "impressive" against a team that would have difficulty beating Jenks or Union on any given Friday night and TU is a team that has won 21 games in the past 2 years without a solid defense.  As a TU fan, let's hope the OU players think like Kirk...drink the crimson Kool-Aid fellas...and TU will own you on Saturday.

This game will be no gimme. In my opinion the entire game comes down to whether or not OU can successfully run the football against Tulsa. If they can, I see them winning fairly comfortably. If they can't, it will go down to the wire.

Don't underestimate Tulsa. They have a lot of speed at the offensive end and are very dangerous. OU better bring it's A-Game. If OU can run the ball and slow down TU's no-huddle offense, OU will have no problem winning this game. However, if they don't, we could be in for a surprise.

As an OU fan, I know this game is not a "gimme".  Tulsa is well-coached and their new quarterback, a former Longhorn recruit, is playing great.

Herbstreit knows TU is going to play Oklahoma tough - he has an agenda.  "IF" OU dominates TU (which I don't believe will happen), he can give them virtually ZERO credit for the win and say "I told you so, a gimme."  On the other hand, "IF" OU struggles against TU (or TU wins), he'll be able to justify dropping Oklahoma out of the rankings.

Herbstreit is pure evil.

I agree with the picker that the comment smacks of little 10 arrogance.

I am not naive enough to think that TU has a "great" shot of winning on Saturday, but I firmly believe they have more than a puncher's chance.

I can't understand how people can see teams like Houston go into Oklahoma State and win, teams like BYU beating OU, teams like Boise State beating Oregon or in herbie's very own conference, Central Michigan beating Michigan State then turn around and say that Tulsa is a "gimme".

That's a stupid comment.  Even if OU wins the game 52-17, that's still a stupid comment.

With the 85 scholarship limit, there are a lot of really good players on a lot of different teams...does OU have more good players than TU? Yes.  But TU has enough good players to beat them as well.

I can't wait for Saturday, it will be fun.

Not that earth shattering comments from Herbsreit. He and Big Bob are friends from Ohio and whenever possible, he will support Stoops and OU.

IF OU is kept from making any long runs AND TU defense keeps Landry from passing any better than last two opponents and since there is no reason to believe that TU's high octane offense can't continue to do well this is no "gimmee."
Arbythree (3 years ago)
I am a huge Sooner Fan, but I take exception to Kirk's comments putting Tulsa in such a negative light. They are anything but a gimmie and although I believe that OU's depth will wear TU down, they deserve the attention that Stoops and the other coaches are giving them.

I WONDER WHAT KIRK SAID WHEN DAVID RADER WENT TO NORMAN WITH A LESSER SQUAR AN TAUGHT THE SOONERS A LESSON??

All sports media people are idiots, until they say something I agree with, then they are brilliant.
Kirk is still an idiot! Picker your are brilliant.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Buster, you're pretty brilliant yourself.

The chief concern with TU is how terrible those first two oppoents were.

The whole ESPN pack of college football bozos is pretty sorry. Mr. Corso doesn't sound so hot after his stroke. Fowler and Mark May and people like that would have no vision if it wasn't for hindsight. Lou Holtz is a disgrace to everywhere he has coached. Note how many failed coaches speed directly to ESPN.

If my memory serves right Kirk said just about the same thing about Houston when they traveled to Stillwater. OU is favored and should be, but TU will play closer than the spread and maybe just maybe be the next C-USA team to upset a Big 12 Team.
Dash Riprock (3 years ago)
Just because Herbie thinks it will be a gimme, doesn't mean anyone else in the free world agrees.

Are you kidding me? Sooner fans have already been treated to a dose of humility down at JerryWorld. I wouldn't think OU fans would overlook anyone including, an improved Baylor. Not really much margin for error with this 2009 team.

Herbstreit also had it on "good authority" that Miles was going to Michigan.  We see where that went.  Hoping for a TU victory  - the upset!  Go Golden Hurricanes!

I am Tulsa alum, class of '75. I have very fond memories of our '71 team. I made the trip to AK and saw TU score 21 4th quater points to win 21-20 over the Razorbacks. And it was an otherwise mediocre team, but boy what a memory....
Go Hurricane. Make some memories for today's students to talk about.

No one around here slights Tulsa I can assure you.
