Hersom Always Had a Good Line

The day I found out I would be covering the USFL’s Oklahoma Outlaws for the Tulsa
World I told my friend Bob Hersom, an Oklahoma City sports writer.
He smiled and said that’s great but the team he covers has a bigger payroll. He covered the Oklahoma Sooners.
Hersom didn’t say much. When he did it was usually pretty funny.
Hersom died this week, leaving quite a legacy for Oklahoma sports writers. He was the OU football beat writer for the Daily Oklahoman for about 20 years. That’s longer than just about anyone I can remember except for the late Jim Weeks of the Norman Transcript.
Hersom was such a fun guy to work with. Yes, he was a competitor, always working to beat the Tulsa World on big OU football stories.
But, it was enjoyable. It wasn’t personal. It was business.
I was at the OU photo day on one of the strangest days in OU football history. Marcus Dupree, the best player in college football, surprisingly did not show up for the first day of OU practice.
After OU officials announced Dupree had car trouble, and would be late, Hersom turned to me and said that’s ironic considering Dupree drives a better car than anyone here.
Oklahoma sports fans, and especially his friends, will miss him.
