Heupel's first play call should be an inaudible -- tune out the crazies

In 2008, Kevin Wilson coordinated the highest-scoring offense in NCAA history, and won the Frank Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant football coach.

In 2009, specifically 11 months after the '08 season concluded, one Joshua Cunningham of Independence, Mo., asked ESPN Big 12 blogger Tim Griffin the following question:

"Do you think there's any chance that Bob Stoops will fire Kevin Wilson as Oklahoma's offensive coordinator and bring back Mark Mangino?"

Congratulations on the promotion, Coach Heupel, and lots of luck.

I decided those ESPN clowns don't know anything about Sooner football a long time ago. BOOMER SOONER!

That "highest-scoring" team also lost the national title in 2008. That 2008 team was one of the best teams in Oklahoma history AND NCAA history! And they lost!! They only scored 14 points when it counted!!! That's why people were upset with Wilson. I could have coached that OU team to a national title game AND WON IT!!
Reminds me of Jenks/Union. Jenks had the highest scoring team in school history this year but lost the championship game and in my opinion due to poor coaching by Jenks. Same as the 2008 title game with OU.

Dang, I bet Bob Stoops is just kicking himself cause he could have won the national championship if he had only known you were out there FreqMan.....probably keeps him up at night!!!
Wow, FreqMan, that's pretty harsh.

If Manny Johnson catches a ball on the goal line, OU probably wins. Instead, it was intercepted. If Juaquin Iglesias holds onto a deep ball in the fourth quarter, OU probably wins. Instead, it was intercepted. If Jon Cooper doesn't step the wrong way and Brandon Walker doesn't let a d-tackle cross his face on the goal line, OU probably wins. And if OU's defense doesn't give up a 52-yard run on a FG drive and a 3rd-and-12 AND a 3rd-and-6 on a TD drive in the fourth quarter, OU probably wins.

I fail to see how any of that was Kevin Wilson's fault. He didn't have a good game, by any means, this year at Texas A&M. But players (at Florida and Oklahoma) deserve the credit and the blame for that 2008 title game, not Kevin Wilson.

I never understood the naysayers on Wilson. Coaches can't have bad games? OUs offense has been great for most of Stoops tenure. The only OC I would want besides him would be Malzahn. That wasn't going to happen so they promoted within the organization. Huepel will do just fine calling plays and more importantly he adds stability and continuity.

The reason we lost the game was exactly that we couldnt stop Tim Tebow on third down numerous times. He would run it or throw the shovel pass to Hernandez over and over.

Thank you John Hoover! You took the words right out of my mouth. Idiots like Freqman like to "try" to look intelligent with their posts on these newspaper websites. But it just shows that they really don't have any understanding about sports. It doesn't come down to who is best statistically on paper....its who has the best game on that day.
Fregman, I'd like to see you in the booth and what you would come up with for play-calling. First of all, you wouldn't even understand the terminology. Second, you'd probably have to be wearing some Depends because you would wet yourself under the pressure of "trying" to call anything.
Come back and post someday when you have some common sense.

Since Wilson wasn't the QB that lead us back to national prominence, I'd expect that Heupel will get a lot more leeway then Wilson or any other OC in the Stoops era has ever gotten.

In 2010 Sooner fans were asking for his head!!! What a bunch of idiots these sooner fans are. Goes to prove as long as you're doing good they back you, then once you stumble a bit they stab you in the back...

I'm not saying OU should have fired Kevin Wilson. Just saying OU should have won the Florida game. They should have won the LSU Championship game as well. When you have great teams like those two Championship teams and you lose...I look at the coaches. I will blame the players 20% but coaches 80% on those two OU championship teams. Just like I blame the Jenks coaches for losing the 6A Championship game. Jenks was by far the better team. The play calling was horrible by Jenks (the best player in the state only carries the ball 17 times!!! Are you kidding me!). But I don't think Jenks should fire the coaches. Just saying they should have won the game and people will be upset at them. This compares to what OU did on those two teams.

Wow freqman a Union booster come to pour salt on Jenks? Then you show yourself to be exactly what this story was about. Stupid fans. I have gone through your posts though, and sports isn't only thing you are stupid about. In fact I would say you worship stupidity. You have absolutely no joy in your life, why are you so miserable? You couldn't coach a pee wee 8 man flag football game my friend. SHOULD have won? Why? Because YOU said so? Well I see no reason to play the games when we have you who knows who SHOULD win all the games. Vegas said Fla SHOULD have won the game, they also said OU SHOULD lose to Florida State. What SHOULD happen, is you not post anymore of your vitriol, (look it up CON I know you don't know what it means, nothing dumber then conservative okie)but I doubt that is going to happen. Now did you catch that FreqMan or was I typing too fast for you?
FreqMan (2 years ago)
Don, Let my try this a little slower for you. LSU game SHOULD have been a victory. The 4th QTR, last drive of the game OU has LSU's defense worn down and is running all over LSU, LSU is out of gas! OU has the best O-line in the country, OU were marching down the field. OU's COACHES decide the next 3 or 4 plays (can't remember if OU went on 4th or they punted?) they should throw the football. Result 3 or 4 incomplete passes and out, OU loses the game they SHOULD have won with better play calling by the coaches. But in Don's world ( and yes, you are in your own little world)You would just take points from the winning team and redistribute them to the losing team because it just wasn't fair that OU coaching staff made poor decisions.
Don's World (2 years ago)
Freqman, still saying it because YOU say that is the way it SHOULD have been. What SHOULD have happened was all the passes should have been complete. The players SHOULD have executed better. The players SHOULD have had Cheerios for breakfast that morning instead of scrambled eggs, things would have turned out better. Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda. Watch out everyone Freqman knows how things SHOULD be. Typical Con, thinks he knows what is best for all but really only cares about self. You keep living in your little fantasy land of Black Helicopters and tin foil hats now ya hear? You SHOULD really quit while you are behind, this is battle of wits and you are unarmed.
FreqMan (2 years ago)
Your right Don's World. I give up. The players should have thrown and caught the ball. On a side note, I ran into Brett Rayl, a former OU player on that OU team that played against LSU...He stated everyone on the sidelines that night had the same observation..but all the OU players and I are just stupid.
