High Ranked OU and OSU "Programs"
Published: 8/26/2011 12:08 PM

What's a big-time program?

A big-time quarterback.

Take away the quarterbacks, and OU is number 20, OSU is number 25.

College football is all about the quarterback unless you have a superstar runner, a great defense, or an easy schedule.

The only true great "program" at the moment belongs to Alabama, which has good but not great quarterbacks.

Don't even think about what TU would be like without its quarterback. Even with him, will OU score 75 on Tulsa in a week? True, the game is a classic look-past with Florida State the game of the century this year. The TU defense is the story there. If it's no good, run.

Pick:
What makes you think Alabama even has a good QB? The Tide will be starting a new QB, and lost their best WR in Julio Jones.

Go Sooners; Go Tea Party

With regard to the latter, yeah, go right into the Boston Harbor. Politics begone.

Speaking of not having a QB, remember that prediction I made around two weeks ago about LSU beating Oregon?

Yeah.....let's go ahead and scratch that.

Mixing sports & politics makes me wanna add some salsa over my strawberry ice cream with a sprinkling of bowel residue on top....

The wait is almost over, at least it helps to take my mind off this heat, up there in Tulsa it's cooled off a bit, down here in the Texhoma area it's day #56 in a row of a 100+....

Now I'm mixing weather & sports, my excuse is that the sun has fried my brain....

Why is Bama' the only great program, in the last 10 years, is there record better than OU's ???? Have they won multiple national championships ???? Do they have more Heisman winners in this past decade than that team in Norman,Oklahoma ????

Are they currently ranked #1 ????

Tulsadn is right. OU's teams were more successful from 2001-2006 than Bama's teams.

Then came Nick Saban. Sorry, but there is no comparison between Bob Stoops and Nick Saban. Saban has taken two limping programs to win National Championships in the last decade. He has shown he can win in the toughest conference and on the national stage.

Stoops incoming freshmen this year were in the 1st grade the last time OU won a national championship. They were in the 4th grade the last time OU beat a decent team in a bowl game.

No, I am not an OSU fan.

The TU and OU game just went into the trash bin. No reason to even watch it. TU without its best player and a demoralized team. I hope OU kees it under 100.

Those incoming freshmen were juniors in high school when OU beat a stellar stanford team in a bowl game. Bama loses three games last yr when they had a great qb, rb, wr, and no significant injuries. Nick aint all that. They will not win the Sec this yr. Too many holes. If all you need is a great defense OU would have 5 more national championships!

That "stellar" Stanford team had losses to wake forest, oregon state, washington, and Cal. And it was the Sun Bowl...sponsored by Brut...in El Paso.

No, the last quality post season win for OU was the 2003 Rose Bowl when OU beat a 10-2 Wash State team. And the 4th grade recruits probably were more interested in Spongebob squarepants.

Picker,

On this one I agree with you. Other than the collapse vs. Auburn last year, Alabama shows up in the big games as well winning on the road. Did every one see how they completely humiliated a good Michigan State team in their bowl game in January? It was an impressive performance for the team and its coaching staff. Oklahoma has a good winning percentage but in recent years has been underwhelming as a road team in big games. They play great in Norman and then when they have to travel they almost tend to look like imposters. Great programs don't vacillate like that ...I'm very interested to see the Florida State game which will say a lot as to whether this years team has matured and can handle hostile environments of the road. Oh, by the way, I don't count the bedlam game in Stillwater or the Texas game in Dallas as true road games since they have just about as many fans there watching in attendance as the other teams they are playing.

Mr. Picker, please tell the designers of this web site to more prominently display your column like it used to be. I get tired of these changes in format when the old one is just fine. Trying to find something now is more difficult and time consuming. Don't tinker with something that is just fine.

Guess I dont see that Bama is head and shoulders above everyone else. If either of the 3 state teams had lost at home in the manner Bama did to Auburn, the Pick would still be rippin em and callin em chokers, etc. Pretty sure they lost to South Carolina too...how does that make them better than eveyone? Anyone remember Utah runnin em out of the Sugar Bowl?

I know OU beat 'bama at least once in the last 10 years. I was there. I can't remember if it was a home and home series. Yes I do! My daughter went to Tuscaloosa. I remember her saying how nice all the 'bama fans were, even though we beat them. I've been down there. It's a beautiful campus..... almost as beautiful as OU's (not really),but OU has the better football program no matter how many cheezy National Championships 'bama claims to have won. I think they claim like 13 or something. I hope we play them in the NCG. Then we'll all know.

You make a great point, Mr. Picker. The starting QB is a highly important position in football, if not the most important position. The backup has little game time experience. It's hard to simulate game time in practice. In addition, it's difficult to adjust to a backup QB, due to the fact that the back up throws the ball a little bit differently than the starter. Different QBs throw the ball at slightly different speeds with different types of spirals (some looser/tighter than others). If you're a WR/RB/TE and you're used to the way the starter throws the ball, it's difficult to adjust to the way the back up QB throws the football. That's why when you see a back up QB come into the game, you'll often see dropped balls.

61241: How in the world is Bedlam at Boone not a 'true' road game for OU? Equal# of fans? You obviously havent been to bedlam lately. That is a tough place to play, they are right on top of you and its about 90-10 OSU fans to OU...
