High school season begins

It was a fun Monday night (into Tuesday morning), as the high school football season kicked off in two important ways around Tulsa.

The first item of business was the Tulsa World high school football preview cover shoot. For a couple of hours Monday evening we took over Circle Cinema, located in the historic Kendall-Whittier district of Tulsa.

You can look for the high school football preview in the Aug. 28 edition of the Tulsa World.

I rarely have bad experiences with high school athletes, and Monday's cover shoot was no exception. Despite stories about recruiting violations, street agents and other more serious issues facing our youth, I'm always reminded that high school athletes are generally the best of the best.

It was refreshing to hear thank yous from many of the players we featured.

We took a lot of the players' time -- and that of the Circle Cinema -- and we owe both our thanks for their patience and cooperation.

I concluded my evening by attending the first high school football practice of the season -- Midnight Madness at Owasso High School.

I have to thank the kind Owasso police officer who pardoned my rush to get to practice.

The rain and lightning put a damper on the night, as the weather forced Owasso to move to its indoor practice facility just minutes into the workout.

But otherwise, it was a pretty unique way to kickoff the season.

I was joined at Owasso by World reporter Kelly Hines. For her, it was the start of a midnight to dusk account of the opening day of the high school football season that will be featured in Wednesday's World.

The football season is definitely upon us. I can't wait.
