Holder, Not Eddie, Should Speak Up
Published: 2/28/2008 3:34 PM

Eddie Sutton campaigned and eventually got his son, Sean, the head men's basketball job at Oklahoma State.
Eddie now needs to let Sean make his own way in the job.
The elder Sutton keeps finding himself in the news, speaking out about this issue and that issue when it comes to OSU basketball.
OSU owes Eddie Sutton a lot because of what he did in reviving the program.
But, Eddie now needs to let Sean sink or swim on his own. No more going on the radio and in the newspapers telling people how the program should be run or perceived.
And, at the other end of the spectrum, OSU athletic director Mike Holder needs to speak up and tell everyone that Sean Sutton is the OSU head coach and will remain the head coach as long as the program is in good shape and no rules are broken.
In other words, it is time to let Sean Sutton have a fair chance to make or break his future as OSU coach.

Mike Holder on January 28....
"I'm supporting Sean Sutton. He's our coach. We've got a lot of games left to play. Let's win some games. Everybody get on board and let's help him. Let's get this turned around."

John, didnt't this Mike Holder quote appear in your newspaper? Do you read your own paper? Holder has been quoted more than once in the past three years basically that he waits until the end of the season to evaluate job performance. I trust his knowledge and judgement much more than yours or other media types.

Mason, I think the point being made here is that there is no endorsement from Holder for Sutton to be the head coach next year much less the future beyond. On the other hand, he has given that very endorsement to Gundy after 2 mediocre 6-6 seasons in a row. He may say lets "get on ship and win some games" for this year, but I haven't heard him mutter a word about supporting Sean for the years following...which by the way will only hurt recruiting.

I couldn't agree more.

Good column--good points.

I wish one of the World sports writers would investigate the past between Holder and Eddie Sutton. I have always heard that Holder, when he was the golf coach, openly despised Sutton. If this is true, then it certainly casts an interesting light on the different manner in which Sutton's situation is being handled as opposed to the way Gundy's situation is being handled. Both are young coaches. Both are having moderate succes (although Gundy has yet to beat a top 5 caliber team). Yet, Gundy receives open support from the Athletic Director, extensions of his contract, and unnecessary salary increases.

It is not Holder's job to respond to fan and media hysterics. This is all a bunch of nonsense and he owes no-one anything. Unless he says something negative about Sean, the contract should be perceived solid. Holder gave no one any reason to question Sean's future. The team's poor performance earlier in the year let to speculation, but an AD cannot spend time responding to baseless speculation all the time!

Sean's job is fine. Get your panties ironed and move on. Holder doesn't have to say anything. Everything he has ever said was in support of Sean and the team. Give me a freakin break.

I think it's about time all of you Eddie Sutton man-crush writers quit crafting glory pieces about the man.

Allow him to fall back into the background now that he allowed his son and the SF Dons the high "privilege" of padding his wins for him.

Sutton was, and is, a selfish embarrassment to OSU. His career was marked by actions that reflected poorly on character ... but got the media panting behind him.

Poor Sean now has to climb out from under his father's reputation and utterances. Eddie is Sean's "cross to bear."

Holder is owned by T-Bone, who currently owns OSU Athletics. If they see that Sean is not his daddy's puppy dog ... he has a chance to survive/achieve on his own merits.

I think they'll give him a shot ... against the wishes of a large portion of their fan base.

Time to stop the media love affair with Eddie. He does NOT deserve itl

HOLDER IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM - The biggest problem OSU Basketball has right now is Mike Holder. His jaw never stops flapping about Gundy, football ticket prices, football attendance, football patience, etc.... He can't seem to find time to spit out a few words of support for Sean and his Team - HE ISN"T SUPPORTING THE PLAYERS. If he had been supportive of Sean during the recent stretch of success I'm sure OSU would have sold more tickets for the recent Nebraska game. Why is Holder is so concerned about ticket sales for football, and proping up Gundy? Why isn't he equally supportive of the Basketball Team and program? Why isn't he promoting more ticket sales for the University and Basketball program by voicing his approval of the recent job Sean is doing? WHAT IS WRONG WITH MIKE HOLDER!?!
