After a long day of tracking a variety of rumors, this is the only Dana Holgorsen certainty: He was in Stillwater on Monday, preparing a game plan for Oklahoma State’s Dec. 29 meeting with Arizona in the Alamo Bowl.
But while at his desk in the west end of Boone Pickens Stadium, Holgorsen was the subject of a great deal of speculation in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette now reports that Holgorsen no longer is involved in the University of Pittsburgh’s head-coaching search, but could wind up in the top job at Pitt’s No. 1 rival – West Virginia University.
West Virginia’s Bill Stewart coached the Mountaineers to nine victories this season, but, reportedly, could be pushed out by new athletic director Oliver Luck. On Dec. 28, West Virginia faces North Carolina State in the Champs Sports Bowl.
“A termination” of Stewart, the Post-Gazette reports, “could happen regardless of the outcome.”
Attempts to contact Holgorsen on Monday were unsuccessful. He did respond to a couple of text messages, but would not address any of the Pitt or West Virginia reports.
Holgorsen has coached the Cowboys to national rankings of No. 1 in total offense (538 yards per game), No. 2 in passing (355-yard average) and No. 3 in scoring (44.9-point average).
It is not known whether Holgorsen, who makes $360,000 at OSU, has met with Cowboy athletic director Mike Holder and head coach Mike Gundy for the discussion of possible contract adjustments.
