Hoops: We Want Jimmer! Anybody Want TU?

TU basketball used to be fantastic.
It was a player on the national scene. It played to packed houses. It was known for hard-nosed overlooked recruits, plucked from various necks in the woods. Its defense was so good it was actually entertaining. The TU basketball team was a factor in civic pride. OU and OSU people supported TU hoops. It was a major attraction.
Cut from there to Wednesday, when TU scored 50-some and lost another one to bring its record to 10-10. The effort was there. Good intentions were there. Luck was not. People were not. The crowd was listed as 4,000-some, or, in other words, horrendous, embarrassing, shocking.
If anybody knows what's going on over there, honk. Where are the answers? Does anybody even care?
On a more uplifting note, the guy from BYU, Jimmer Fredette, can almost shoot a basketball cleanly through the hole in the bottom of the net. He is a great shooter. Some say he is the next Pete Maravich. He's not that, not even close. His ball handling is fine for college. He's quick, not fast. Can he play in the NBA? Some, sure. But who is he going to guard? Some mascots might be able to post him up and score with ease. But when it comes to college action, he's the number one ticket. Imagine what he would do for ticket sales at a March Madness regional site like Tulsa.

It's very clear that the TU athletic department can't multitask. They are probably over analyzing things there on 11th street. The TU fans I know still care about their Hurricanes and hope they return to their successful selves.
Jimmer is pretty exciting to watch but like you said, he will find some difficulty playing against the NBA sized guys.

Gone from disgust and frustration to total lack of interest. Unfortunately the only thing that will ignite interest at this point is a change in coaches.

TU basketball went from exciting basketball. They constantly outquicked and outshot teams. We used to have "40 minutes of hell". Whe had Billy Gillespie finding players. We found guys from Wagoner, BTW, OKC who could play.
Now, Go to a TU game and it is "tea and crumpets".
The half-time show is often the most exciting part of a TU game.
Hard to believe they wouldn't even give alum Mike Anderson an interview. Now, they wouldn't be able to get an interview with him.

I think Jimmer is a slam dunk in the NBA because he already plays that way. I love to watch him but I'd hate to play with him because he doesn't ever pass.

ButterP: Who could he guard? Some assistant coach, maybe. You're right, when he starts his dribbling routine, the other four head for the backboard.

I posted yesterday on the subject of TU basketball after I got home from the game. Reluctantly, I feel it is time for a coaching change for the simple reason that while Doug Wojcik can recruit good players, he has yet to recruit any great players (Tubby, Steve Robinson, and Bill Self all were able to get at least 1 great player to come to TU). Worse yet, Wojcik does not seem capable of identifying potential star talent. Bill Self was exceptionally good at this, how else do you end up with Kevin Johnson, Dante Swanson, and Antonio Reed, who were pretty much overlooked by everyone else because they didn't fit the "mold". Who needs a 6'7" center? Who needs a 5'11" shooting guard? Well, that 6'7" center jumped higher than most people playing the game and was able to get off the ground so quickly he played like he was 7'. Rarely was he unable to guard a center who was 6'11" and rarely could a 6'11" guy guard him. Swanson was another one who played bigger than he was because of his athleticism. Wojcik is trying to find players who fit a mold rather than using his imagination on how he can use players who can flat out play? Where are the guys from Beggs? Seems to me that Pooh Williamson and Rod Thompson were really good for TU and that the famous playground ball in Beggs prepped them pretty well for college basketball.
I know he comes with baggage, but Billy Gillespie is available to coach and I think TU would be a perfect fit for him at this point in his life and you might be able to keep him around for a while if you give him the second chance he is looking for. Fans will come out and watch Gillespie's teams and we all know he can recruit. Other names: Pooh Williamson (he is ready now) and you could reach out to Tubby Smith again. I know he is at Minnesota, but it is clearly obvious that Tulsa is a special place to him and his family as well and he might consider returning to finish out his career.

One thing that would help would be a PLAN.
What is the goal out there now?
What is success? Failure?
Somebody in the administration needs to make an appearance concerning the hoops program every decade or so. Some TU fans are partly to blame, being all giddy over winning that idiotic losers tournament a few years back. Look what that got you.
If the administration doesn't care, why should anybody else?
Is anybody home?

Maybe the administraion really doesn't care? Might they be working toward a plan to discontinue basketball, in an "all-eggs-in-one-basket" approach to supporting football?

Jimmer, slam dunk in the NBA? As a what? Spot up shooter, and maybe someone who can create his own shot, maybe. Now yea he is slam dunk in those capacities, as starter? No way. 6 ft 1 inch in his heels. Without the quickness to hide his size. But most definitely fun to watch. Some are comparing him to Pete? Now that sounds like the same some you eat breakfast with or something Pick. You said Pete and they said yea maybe. I haven't heard anyone else mention him and Pete in same breath.
As far as TU they just make me sad. Almost wish all their effort went into the BB program with little spent on the Football, as in BB they could actually compete. One player can put you on the map, two and three can put you deep in the tourney.

Rumor is TU’s men’s b-ball program is sucking a $1 million dollar deficit per yr now w/ Oh-no we still have Wojo.
Did TG’s Pitt “buy out” give TU some ammo to buy out No Mojo Wojo?
Sadly, Bubba is the same TU AD who ‘agreed to give No-go Woj an extension. I don’t know one fan that agreed w/ that decision even after winning the “no body cares” CBI. (By the way, Michael Walls was the All Star in that series & a JP recruit)
Alot of good coaching candidates out there.
Former Wake Forest Coach Dino Gaudio (let go after taking team to 2 straight NCAA’s w/ a 44-18 record)
Pooh (done outstanding job as A&M assistant w/ Turgeon’s boys)
Billie “Clyde” Gillipse (can recruit, work-a-holic, resume speaks for itself)
Scott Sutton (ORU connection worked once plus you wonder what Scott could do given all the right tools to succeed)
IF TU hires the right coach, you would see an immediate resurgence in season ticket sales & fan interest.

Jimmer would be about the best player ever in the WNBA. Fits that game perfectly. Would be quite a gimmick for the Shock ... That does not significantly diminish his college star, however. Bristol is well on their way to appointing him Maravich II.
BobSmith007

Gillipse? Well, he'd probably go for it. It would make an initial splash. And it's not like locals won't support an alcoholic coach.

Laffalot, I had to laugh a lot at your suggestion of Scott Sutton to take the head job at TU. To include him with the others you listed is pure lunacy. At schools like TU and ORU if other programs don't come afer your coach then you don't want him either.

What's the best TU can do this year?
Is the NIT even out of reach?
That losers' tournament reeks.
The Picker

Gene-O, I'm laughing right long with you. Scott Sutton? That team hasn't won a game this century.
Glenn616

I actually thought that TU would make the NIT. It looks like Tulsa will be playing in a complete loser tournament like the CBI or the Collegehoops dot com tournament. Can someone please explain to me how Wojcik has kept his job at TU for six seasons?
