Hooterville Cam Hits Hardwood
Published: 5/26/2010 2:53 PM

Two stories broken here by the Picker investigative team weeks ago are about to explode.

The first story was about sticker Shock, the price of the seats at the WNBA games here. Routine seats are almost $50. That's nonsense. The game Wednesday was on ESPN 2. The announced crowd was 4,100. Probably counting players and refs. To see so few people in a large arena is embarrassing.

The Hooterville Cam was used in all its infamy Tuesday, focusing on the floor itself, keeping a low trajectory on shots, anything to keep from showing thousands upon thousands of empty seats. The game went off at a nutty time, barely after work on a weekday. Coach Nolan is doing a great job. The new team plays hard. But unless they make it so a family can afford to go to a game, this adventure will get rocky fast.

The second big story broken by Team Picks weeks ago was the surprising condition of the OU rule-compliance situation. These questions were raised: How could three (one alleged) rules violations happen in such a brief period of time? Is anybody in charge down there? Yesterday, a CBS writer suggested the NCAA death penalty could come into play.

After the pep rallies elsewhere, all roads lead to this space.

Picker,
"Did you ever know that you're my Hero?"
Good job on the exposes...I would rather watch a 9th grade boys basketball game than a bunch of pro women (at least I might see a dunk...)
Like you said two days ago: HURRY UP FOOTBALL SEASON!!!! The Huskers may have their best team in a decade. Don't want to step on your toes but here is your first big upset lock of the year: the HUSKERS will beat Texas in Lincoln on Oct. 16th in the Revenge Game of the Year.

H-Fan, the record will show that while OKC and local homers were laughing at the prospect of a new and improved Nebr., the Picks was the first site to proclaim it back -- after that point loss to V-Tech. The nightmare versus T-Tech was a setback. Can't you play anybody named Tech?

Interesting nonconference schedule, Western Ky, Idaho and S Dakota State. Anybody worried yet? At Wash could be a little tough. Everybody says the Wash qb is a pro gimmie. When OU played him, he couldn't hit anything but the ground.

There is a good hungry vibe to Nebraska, as there was with OU, lo, those many years ago.

Yup, while OU continues to piddle around with the spread, turning their own defense into sissies during practices, Nebraska will be gearing up to smash folks in the mouth. I may have to get satellite TV, just to see some old fashioned Cornhusker smackdowns. Not my team, but they could convert me.

Tulsan in Exile I'd like to see you call Ronnell or Travis Lewis "sissies"

Picker, the simple answer to how these things could happen is simple. The Rules Compliance Committee is there to educate and follow up to make sure that the athletic programs are abiding within the framework of the rules. For you or anybody else in the world to imply that the Committe is at fault is absurd. You cannot know someone is going to break a rule before it happens anymore than a policeman knows beforehand that someone is going to rob a bank or simply run a redlight. You cannot expect someone to catch them before it happens. So the blame goes back to the individuals who break a rule and then try to cover it up. Eventually it will be found out, but you can't expect an organization to "catch them" before it happens.
Anything else you want to be bitter about?

Sooner Transplant, I get what you're saying but still the university should be held responsible when it gets out of hand like it has--just as when crime gets out of hand, the police department and city judicial system is held responsible. For a school to have already been on probation and still commit further infractions in multiple sports is enough for the NCAA to penalize the entire athletic program. But will that happen to OU? I doubt it.

Huskerfan, I like your moxie. I'm not quite convinced that this year's defense (and therefore team) will be better than last year's. Regardless, it should be stout. Now, the offense, on the other hand, may be the determining factor between an 8 win and 10 win season. I'm in a "wait and see" mode for your Huskers.

Hey Pick, did you see that OU is now involved in yet another scandal? This one involving their ticket office. Apaarently, the KU ticket office is being investigated for giving employees tickets to scalp as a form of salary.

Turns out that two of the people questioned used to be employed by the OU ticket office and according to them, "that was the way it was done at the University of Oklahoma."

Another quote: "When queried by the investigator as to whether he had even seen money change hands in that fashion in Norman, Simmons said that he had seen an assistant athletic director and Tom Blubaugh, passing money back and forth when Tom Blubaugh was the manager of tickets at OU."

Yikes.

MM,
You make a good point. I, too, am curious about our offense...but what alot of people don't know is that our starting QB, Zac Lee, was playing last season on an elbow (on his throwing arm)that needed surgery. He played pretty well in the Holiday Bowl against Arizona (33-0). Behind him we have two returning running backs, Roy Helu and Rex Burkhead, who will be thunder & lightning. They will be running behind an experienced O-line. We have an all-conference WR (Niles Paul) and a 2nd team all-conference TE (Mike McNeil). On top of that, we have the BEST FG kicker in college football, Alex Henry, so I think the O will be okay. Now for the D, we have two ALL-Americans returning, Jared Crick (who may turn out to be as good as Suh) and Prince A., maybe the best lockdown CB in the NCAA, a sure first round pick...oh, and the best two things about our Defense: The Pelini Brothers!
I will be in Stillwater on Oct 23rd for your paybacks too. (I only hope we don't have a let-down game after thumping Texass the week before).
Go Big Red!

"I will be in Stillwater on Oct 23rd for your paybacks too."

Haha, I was waiting for that. I may have to butt heads with you on that, my friend. Either way, it should be a really good game. On top of that, it is homecoming for us. My guess is that with the Husker fans in full force this game will have the highest attendance of the year at BPS.

With that said, I'll go ahead and thank your Huskers now for the win we'll take. A victory over a top 10 team is always welcome in my book. Haha!

Hey Pick,
I have some breaking news for you! Leaked on the internet today, Phil Steele's College Football Preview publication, which won't hit newstands until June, has NEBRASKA #5. You'll never guess who he has as #1....(waiting for suspense to build)...............nope, not Alabama,....(more suspense)............OU.
He thinks OU & NU will both be undefeated going into the Big 12 CG. Cool!
Gene M (3 years ago)
Mr. Sooner Transplant, what does the term, "compliance" mean to you? Is it in reference to the Rules or simply to see that the school complies with any sanction which have been imposed?
The Picker (3 years ago)
Forget Phil Steele picking a peck of pickled peppers. He couldn't pick one pepper. Somebody needs to ask this comedian one simple question about OU number one: Want to bet? Opinion without support is junk.

Exile is exactly right. It's time to man up in Norman.

Transplant: Somebody has to be responsible for the compliance people, correct? Well then who in the world has failed to make sure compliance complied? After a world's worst phone scandal, OF COURSE you should check on a coach's business phone activity. Is the athletic director getting a free ride in the wake of all the real and alleged trouble?
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Didn't Pil Steele pick Notre Dame #6 in his pre-season magazine last year? Just saying...
BobSmith007 (3 years ago)
Hey. You have no idea what's going on in Norman. It could be that there are 350 major violations at any one time. having them catch only three over the past half-dozen years would be a great track record! Not as good as USC, but pretty good.
