How About a Pleasant Sports Moment For a Change

Nolan has on more polka dots than TU has students.
TU

We here at the world-famous Picks, (we have readers in Asia), would like to take a second to praise the University of Tulsa.

The reason: general athletic principles.

Too often, even close to home, TU plays third fiddle to below average teams at OU and OSU -- OSU football and OU basketball, for example.

We recall one night during the just-completed regular football season when TU was the third story on all three local television sports broadcasts.

Good thing there wasn't a TV media flag football game, or free food somewhere; TU might not have been covered at all.

Get this: TU has 2,882 under-grad students!

That of course makes it the smallest school playing major college football; and playing it well.

2,882, plus 1,243 grad students, total of 4,125.

There are probably more than 2,882 in Joe's in Stillwater on the average Saturday; it seems like there are more than 2,882 OU homers on the Sports Animal radio network.

TU football is consistently competitive with richer and bigger programs; and the basketball team is on the way back back. It plays OU soon in Oklahoma City. There's one way to get your name in the spotlight.

TU shows that you don't need big numbers to be competitive. If I'm not mistake, Rice is the second smallest, and I would say they are heading in a brighter direction in terms of football, thanks for taking a branch from the Kragthorpe tree. That says to me it's not how many you have, but who you have, which is why TU is smart to do what they can to save Kragthorpe. I don't think they can save Wojick once/if he gets offers. But hopefully TU will be built back up.

You're right, Chris, Rice has 2,988 under-grad students.

Amazing, isn't it, both those schools are competing against places 20 times bigger!

Funny -- I actually think TU has a better chance of keeping Wojcik long term. I know he sometimes notes his bewilderment with Tulsa and TU (he says it's the quietest campus he's ever been on and frequently mentions that he wants the fans out), but TU actually has the money to pay Wojcik competitively like the elite basketball coach he may become. Even if CUSA is no Big 12, with Memphis, it's a better conference than what TU was in the last 20 years or so -- the Valley was a dog when TU left and the WAC was well, wac-tacular. You can have a big-time basketball program at Tulsa if you try.

I'll forever cherish Kragthorpe and hope he never leaves, but there are just too darn many BCS schools that pull the trigger on their coaches too quickly. We may just keep him this year, but before long, some AD is going to realize that it's better to win with a classy coach than to lose with regurgitated NFL assistants. (How does Al Groh still have a job?)

Thanks for the props, Picker. I think the rest of the state overlooks TU far too often. Then again, in the case of the OKC Animal guys, some of them haven't seen their toes in decades.

Many moons ago, when I was laboring in a soybean plant and was told to fix something or other, a wise man told me to "Do the best you can with what you got." Thanks for recognizing that TU does precisely that! They may not be able to be competitive with the "big boys" year in and year out, but the fact they are competing with them at all is remarkable. You are one of the very few media in Tulsa who recognizes and appreciates that, and it puts you at the top. (It's good to be da King.)

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
