How Did Warden Stoops Do on This One?
Published: 8/1/2008 1:29 PM

Given the increasing frequency with which punks are showing up on college campuses to play big-time sports, maybe they should be rated according to their risk of perpetrating a crime spree.

Players are given stars on athletic ability.

Perhaps the high-risk rascals should have little weapons beside their names, not stars.

On the coaching side, what's enough?

Even alleged bastions of purity like Penn State have come to resemble a cell block. Some predict Arkansas could wind up with yellow tape around the entire football stadium.

How about we give coaches two punks per recruiting class. Then the coach is on the ethical clock.

One pretty hilarious aspect of the most recent OU debacle was how, moments before the player was dismissed, certain members of the electric media said it was no big deal at all. This remains, dear people, the homer capital of the earth.

Electric media as opposed to diesel media?
All porfessions have jerks. Sports writers in particular should know.

I didn't spell check. SO SUE ME!!!

GET A SECONG CHANCE AND THEN COME TO NORMAN FIGURING YOU'LL DO YOUR THING AND GET A 3RD CHANCE ?? GET LOST, JARBOE.......
Arthur (5 years ago)
Overall Jarboe's a pretty terrible rapper, not just in content but in style as well. Just my opinion, but I think most people don't view it as a big deal because many of the rap songs played at football games across the country have similar messages. Many "hit" rap songs if you listen have lyrics that can be summarized as "I'm great because I'm me, I have hot girlfriends, and I shoot people". Some people may not realize this because the edited versions that are played on the radio and in stadiums(or perhaps stadia?) across the country do not have these lyrics. It's a big deal that this guy was dumb enough to put it all over the internet after being given a second chance involving a gun.

Kind of like the NBA. Our thugs are better than your thugs.

Poor old Bobby Bowden at FSU takes under the table donations for a bail bond fund for his collection of future inmates.
World Picker (5 years ago)
Everybody should get a second chance, blanket policy.

Everybody is forgiven once.

But when it comes to taxpayer money and extremely valuable scholarships, third chances should be taken elsewhere.

Chris (5 years ago)
I think Jarboe is a good rapper. He compares to Master P, one of the greatest rappers of all time.

Maybe they could get together and make a good CD. I would buy it.

I appreciate and admire Bob Stoope for requiring ethical standards of his players.
canester2002 (5 years ago)
I suspect Boren made the call this time with the caveat that maybe Stoops tried to call this joker on the carpet and didn't like the response he received.

Every college has the pretend gangstas(and maybe some real ones). They just don't get arrested with a gun on HS campus and put on probation then follow it up with the idiocy we saw from this guy's youtube video.
Jim (5 years ago)
Did anyone catch the name of the girl he menitons? Is she real? Bragging that he comes from Atlanta where they carry guns, AK's. that could have had a little to do with it.
Eyes Tee (5 years ago)
Glad this doofus is gone. Who needs the embarrasment? Clearly, he is a thug. Stoops must have sensed this early in the recruiting process. Good for Boren, if he said that enough was enough.
Nit Picker (5 years ago)
No spin can excuse Stoops/OU's hesitation-if any did indeed exist - in dismissing Jarboe immediately upon viewing the video.

But, contrary to World Picker's flippant, sarcastic, cynical, childish, outdated, and naive view, it is not about OU. Penn State, FSU, et al.
It is about the youth of this country-specifically the ones with sufficient athletic ability to earn them a college education and why so many of them can't adjust to society enough to take advantage of their talent.
And, why some, such as Jarboe, don't even recognize they are malfunctining.

Certainly Oklahoma's Division I universities could refuse to recruit Jarboe - like kids. But that would not weed out those that stray later in their college football career. (OSU's linebacker charged with rape or OU's Dvorcek, take your pick).

Big time college coaches are paid to make the decisions Stoops made. It was a no brainer.

But make no mistake. these are 18 -21 year old children they are dealing with. At the most difficult time of their maturation process.

While the benefits of a full college scholarship can be fairly described as priceless, who among us at 18 were able to put that into perspective?

Looking back at each of our own 18-21 year span, who of us would want to be responsible for both the on-field and off-field actions of 85 of yourselves.
$3.5 million/year doesn't sound like so much now does it?

Get a clue, World Picker.
You are not much more than a lightweight smarmy, smarta**ed wisecracker.
You are way over your head even trying to discuss the Jarboe matter.
Arthur (5 years ago)
I don't always agree with the Picker but, (this is just a guess) it's pretty obvious that he recognizes it's a nationwide problem. You talked yourself in circles and said nothing more than he did. You think you are offering clarity but really you are just repeating yourself.

Anyways,

I definitely agree on the second chances and believing in players that seem like good kids. Sometimes it pays off, like it did with Darrent Williams, and sometimes it doesn't, I think we all know about the negative examples.

Hey at least Jacobe has a grill, maybe he can pawn those teeth.

Mary, don't go annointing St. Bobby now. Dvoracek was supposed be done for life at OU after putting his BEST FRIEND in the hospital while drunk and conventially not remembering the incident. Unfortunately, when Mr. Stoops figured out that defense wasn't going to be so good. Mr. Dvoracek was right back on the team.

I will give OU, who knows if it was Stoops, Boren, Castiligone or the Gaylords, credit for getting rid of this idiot. I don't think you could say waited on this decision. The video came out one day and he was gone the next. Doesn't sound like hesitation to me. This was definately right decision by whomever made it.
Tom (5 years ago)
excuse me nitpicker, but my grandads (not princes of industry) were working very hard to provide for families by 18, my dad was commanding 3 other, younger guys (he was 20) in a Sherman Tank in France and I was (stupidly in retrospect)trying to be a Navy pilot at 19. Do you really believe that mere athletic ability is a pass on adulthood?
Reality (5 years ago)
Tom, first of all this is not the same day and age as when your grampas were 18/19. Second there is no possible way that you were in flight school at 19. not in the Navy, Air Force, or any other institution. You would have to have your degree first.

Now, back to reality 2008. Jarboe has made some mistakes i agree with that fact. But, most of the kids now days are listening to and or trying to emulate rappers, rock stars, hollywood actors, and athletes. He was doing nothing different than most teenagers do in their homes and around the neighborhoods when they are in the company of friends. Even the kids of all the people that want to call this kid stupid or label him a thug. Kids are kids and teenagers are teenagers. If everyone that has kids were such great parents and judges of character we would not have a need for drug rehabs, detention centers, there would be no Columbine incidents, teenage drunk driving deaths, or the like. Come on people none of the people here on this thread has a past i guess. GOD must only be shining on the people of OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL.

What is the true sad fact is that we all too often give up on teenagers without giving enough of our time to maybe show them a different pathway instead we just want to pounce on them for doing what they see. Any other kid on scholarship in a different sport would have gotten a slap on the wrist at most for this. At least he wasn't taping himmself beating up someone else on film which is the other new craze that we innocent adults with unblemished paths want to ignore.

Get off the kid he has been punished enough. Now he will go to another program that will give him a mentor (something we probably never thought to do) and he will have a chance to turn it around and beat us to death in a bowl game. Good Luck Jarboe!!!!
SBH (5 years ago)
Reality, I don't which one you live in, but bringing guns to school and rapping about atlanta where they roll with AKs and shoot up people isn't the one I live in. Don't excuse this junk. He is over 18 years of age. I think in that time he would have learned that this crap is intolerable, especially after he was put on probabtion. At 18 years of age, someone better be able to seperate B-E-T from reality...but hey at least Jarboe has a grill. He can bank on that.
Reality (5 years ago)
Oh i forgot I live in Tulsa OK (backwards A_S Oklahoma). SBH must stand for Southern Baptist Hollier than thou. Get a grip. Like you 've never done anything that you wish you could change. Thats what wrong with this state.
steve (5 years ago)
I suspect there was more going on behind the scenes than we know about, I doubt that Stoops kicked the guy off the team just for his youtube video.

Eric (5 years ago)
Nitpicker is a joke! Are you trying to be a psychologist...providing such helpful insight on todays troubled youth...here on the local TW sports blog....what a joke....get a life!!
Jeff (5 years ago)
Had Chris Collins never been in Stillwater, $1 million bucks says Stoops would have handled this "internally" like everything else in the past.

Eric:
I aspired to attend medical school and become a psychiatrist, but alas, just didn't have the patients.
Now I wiish I had - you would be my annuity.

Otherwise, I have a life. Three squares, trips to the mall, free meds. Keep working and paying your taxes, chump. I need the money.

Tom:
Thanks to your grandad. My dad was flying air cover for him over France. Both of them and folks like them are real heroes and not a gun toting rapper or a cornerback or a running back.

Of course, you do a great job of proving my point. So thanks to you, too.

I think you need to read slower, if that is possible.

Arthur:
You give World Picker a pass to the extent one might consider you a, dare I say it, minion.

Unfortunately, WP doesn't get it. His real heroes appear to be, in order of importance to him:
1. Himself
2. Sports bookies
3. Anyone who bashes OU
4. The race horse Dennis of Cork
5. Himself
Oops. Guess that is a circular argument.

You need to take reading lessons with Tom, then in about four years come back to the blog and we will try again.

Chris (5 years ago)
Guys, enough of listening to losers like Nitty Picker.

Take a look at this, actually, Nit Picker, you may like the Daily Oklahoman's version of the Picker better. Did you take that job I was telling you about?

All you have to do is go to Newsok website and go to sports. "Keep your mouth shut..." and read the article. Look like the picker has a poser in his profession. Nit Picker, did you write this? Seriously?

I think this is you writing. I looks really good. Way to go.
Eric (5 years ago)
Nitpicker....how often do you dress up in womens clothes...lipstick on....standing in front of the mirror saying things like "It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again?" I bet you do it in between blogs dont you? Poor retched soul
World Picker (5 years ago)
Thank heavens for Arkansas.

That program makes everybody feel clean as a whistle by comparison.
