How Dumb Can You Possibly Be?

Did Oklahoma State play last weekend?

Against SEC power Georgia? Biggest game ever in Stillwater? It did? It stomped Georgia? It is on the Sports Illustrated cover for the second time this this year? OSU is ranked number five in the nation?

Wow.

Sure couldn't tell it around here because all anybody cares about is being stupid about OU. Concerning the BYU fiasco:

What 80-yard scoring drive late in the fourth quarter with the game on the line?

Which 9 out of 10 passes completed on that drive with the game on the line?

What pass defense that was torched for more than 300 yards?

What winning touchdown pass that was wide open in the end zone by 10 yards?

OU fans and the OU media alike have done it again. They played worse that the football team. They don't have selective memories. They have dumb memories.

Have you heard what they're saying? They're saying the defense played well enough to win! Hey. Wait. Guess what. Had the defense played well enough to win, it would have won.

Here's what really happened. The defense played well enough in the first quarter, against a chump. It played well enough in the second quarter. It played well enough in the third quarter. But with the game on the line in the fourth quarter, it choked. Even with all the offensive nuttiness, make one stinking lousy play, and you win.

Why have OU fans and the OU media turned on Wilson instead of Venables? Because sadness dilutes reality.

More bad news: Miami is far better than those Big 12 North stiffs.

In "other" news in the state this week, Oklahoma State is really good.

Gosh, I don't know - maybe OU's loss of Sam Bradford and in a game they were favored to win by 3 TD's seems like more of a story than Oklahoma State beating a team they were supposed to beat?  Maybe?

"Dog bites man", ain't much of a story.

As for blaming OU's loss on either/or - it falls on both sides of the ball.  The offense sucked, across the board.  The defense couldn't stop BYU on their final scoring drive - this "chicken or the egg" blame game is ridiculous - in the end, Oklahoma had a chance to win the game with a field goal - and missed.

Don't fall for it, Pick. Just because Venables stinks does not mean Wilson doesn't stink. If only there was one person in charge of it all that could.......

Vermontsooner, the point Picker is making is that the media would rather talk about anything OU than something fantastic for OSU.

They would rather talk about which week Brandford is going to come back for an hour than talk about the fact that OSU is ranked in the Top 5 and on the cover of SI for five minutes.

There is something definitely wrong with that.

Pickerbuddy,

Gotta hand it to you.  You sunk the 3 pointer this time.

We have some STOOPid coaches.
Arbythree (3 years ago)
Well at least I beat the Picker.
BLA (3 years ago)
Vermonster...were you blind? Bradford wasn't doing much when he was in there, then again, trying to convert 3rd and forever's on every possession after an O-lineman doesn't quite get "hut 2" and continuously goes on "hut 1" or grabs a hold of Mormon jersey on every play.  Go back to your hillbilly maple syrup making, its that time of year (and yes, I've been to Vermont, I have tapped a tree for sap, and yes, I know if you live in Vermont, you're a hillbilly!)

Tattoo, I was referencing radio talk. I'm glad to see all the print and am very grateful for it.

I'd say that I disagree with the Picker in most instances, actually. But in this case, he happens to be correct when talking about local bias.

I listened all day today against my better judgement. A day in which OSU cracked the top 5 for the first time since 1985 and news broke of another SI cover (only this time it is national, not regional). Still, the radio guys would rather talk for hours about OU's misfortunes than OSU's achievements.

Is Bradford's injury a story? Of course. Is it the only story, though? Absolutely not.

I could understand if it were two years ago or even last year at times, but not right now. Right now OSU is a success story with many different storylines that Al and his minions just don't care about.
OU_Glenn (3 years ago)
Mr. Picker,
I have to somewhat disagree with you on the OU Defense. The defense didn't play well throughout the game. Even in the first half, there were blown coverages and the defense had trouble slowing down BYU's backup running back. Whenever the corner blitz was run, the defense got burned. If BYU doesn't commit all those penalties and does not turn the ball over 4 times, BYU might have won by more. With that being said, can Venables actually call something other than a 4-man rush on third down and 4th down when the game is on the line? Even on 4th and 2, they only rush 4-men. When the game is on the line, OU's defense never seems to step up. As much as folks might like to make fun of Mack Brown, he at least has the courage to replace assistant coaches that are not passing muster.

I will give credit where credit is due. OSU played great defensively. Their defensive staff mixed up their play calls and had the Georgia offense completely off balance. Their offense didn't play great, but, at least their play calls were better than the 1950's style play calling of the OU offensive coaching staff.

Miami looked like a good football team. Their defense didn't play well. However, the OU Defense is going to have it's hands full with the Miami passing game. Plus, Miami has better athletes on offense than BYU.

BLA,

I'm not sure if you agree or disagree with my post.  I get that you think I'm a hillbilly, was that your point?  You're wrong about Bradford though, he was the 1 bright spot in the first half, he just didn't have any help.  His QB rating for the game was over 150.0.

MexiMike, in my opinion, the media would rather talk about the current state of the Sooners because it's the bigger story, that's the point I'm making.  Oklahoma State was supposed to be good and supposed to beat Georgia...they are, and they did.  How is that deserving of more press than Oklahoma dropping it's first game of the season to a 3 TD dog, Heisman winner Sam Bradford being injured and out 2 to 4 weeks, and the Sooners losing Jermaine Gresham for the year?

OSU deserves some limelight as the #5 team in the country, but the Sooners collapse is the bigger story - both locally and nationally.  Look at the news coverage from the major networks - the Sooners problems are being talked about everywhere.  If all the sports networks were talking more about OSU than OU, I think the "local bias" claim would be substantiated, but the Sooners are the bigger story around the country, not just locally.

47 in a row is why the bigger and more relevant, local story is OU.  End of story.  Journalism classes will help you determine that.
The ORIGINAL Adman (3 years ago)
Listening to the Sports Urinal yesterday, I was expecting to hear their thoughts on the OU and OSU games.  When i tuned in, they were in a discussion about the BYU win and you could tell they had been on it the entire segment and probably some before that.  I figured they had either already talked about the OSU game or they had not gotten there yet.  Going into the next segment, they continued the OU talk from shoelaces to someone's pants being big to whether or not the titght end that started at center was really better than the one from last year when one of them, I believe the short, troll-like one, asks the mediocre Japanese baseball star, "What did you think of the OSU game."  "They were really good, man."  "Yes, I agree Jim, they were definitely good.  Good win, Jim."  And then back to Kevin Wilson and whether or not the line was as good as he was saying and whether or not Stoops was smart enough to know when they should pass the ball.

Anyone who disagrees with the Picker here is off their rocker and has NO idea how the industry should work.

When you have fans who still wear their onesy pajamas of a particular school in as your journalists, this is what happens.

To even compare the OSU game to "Dog bites man" is about as weak an argument I have ever heard.

Rarely has OSU ever won a game of this magnitude while OU has proven they have trouble with lesser, non-conference foes on neutral fields every year at the end of the season.  Which story is Dog bites man?

The story was Bradford.  And they hardly spoke of it.  They wanted to dissect which back-up on the line could fill-in because the number of stars he had when he came out of high school. I’ve worked around these guys before.  I know them and have seen and heard them outside the airwaves.  They are living, breathing tribute machines to everything that is sooner.  If there is any reason why you guys wanted to vomit in your Post Toasties on Sunday morning, it is because of these guys.  They fill your head full of propaganda and it is believable because the talent level is so high most years, one or two losses can cushion their BS.  But, they are no different than the Iraqi Minister of Information.  And you are no different than a derelict who will sit there and believe anything you hear.
sctsports77 (3 years ago)
Look, I'm not from this state originally, but in today's journalism, not withstanding some calling themselves journalists who are really just show hosts...in today's journalism, if it bleeds it leads, and which team's bleeding right now?  OU, the program with the 47-game win streak.  That's why it's being discussed more than OSU.  As long as OSU parlays it into bigger and better things this season, the Georgia win may be the biggest ever in the program's history, and yes it probably should garner more discussion.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Vermont, if OU is the bigger story nationally, then why is Dez on the cover of SI diving in the endzone for a TD rather than Bradford on the ground squeezing his shoulder?

As Adman said, this was a huge victory for OSU and in some ways, a welcoming party for OSU football onto the national scene. Were they favored to win? Yes, because it was in Stillwater. But even then, I'd say most media picked Georgia to win.

And like I said, I agree that Bradford and OU losing to BYU is a big story...BUT it is not the ONLY story. OSU deserves much more from its own local media than five minutes and a sweep under the rug. Obviously you are a sooner fan, but try to look at this objectively. If it were your team that was ranked 5th in the country for the first time in 15 years and had its first national SI cover EVER, wouldn't you be a little mad that your own local media didn't care enough to talk about it?
MexiMike (3 years ago)
SCTS, what is this 47 game winning streak you keep talking about? If it even exists, how is that relevant to the discussion? Are you saying that if this winning streak didn't exist OSU would get better coverage?

The point remains that although OU is a big story, it is not the only story.
dcood (3 years ago)
No doubt OU stunk it up but maybe, just maybe Max Hall is pretty good as well as the TE...Again, no one on OU bench watching the play clock with the game on the line, INEXCUSABLE.
Fire The Politicians (3 years ago)
Picker:  You are right and wrong.  Yes, the defense did give up 300+ yards passing and the game winning touchdown.  But they did make a play.  They interecepted a pass and gave the offense the ball on what, the BYU 20? The offense had first and goal at the 2.  If they punch it in, game's over.  Why not go for it on 4th and 6 and if you don't make it, they have 90+ yards to go?  Woulda, coulda, shoulda

Then there were the 93 yards in penalties.  I would say the loss was a real team effort, just like they usually are.
VermontSooner (3 years ago)
As I've said, I agree that OSU should have more of the limelight.  Dez on the cover of SI is awesome, and well deserved - what more can I say?  The only recognition OSU fans should be concerned with is what the polls say, and the Cowboys are ranked #5 in the country, that's pretty good recognition if you ask me.

I'm actually trying to make a point concerning press coverage at local/national levels.  Let's take the names of the teams out of the equation (because it really doesn't matter), very simply:

1. Team 'A' (the favorite) beats Team 'B' (the underdog).
2.  Team 'A' (the underdog) beats Team 'B' (the favorite).

Even left as simple as that, headline #2 is more of a story than headline #1.  Don't take my word for it, look at CNNSI's College Football front page:

Storylines:
1.
2.
3.
4. Sam Bradford's injury has changed the shape of the Heisman Race
5. What BYU-OU could mean, ACC's lost weeked, more...

Five storylines dedicated to Oklahoma, and it's not much different on any of the other sites.  I understand the frustration by OSU fans that there team's accomplishment isn't being more "heralded" by the media, but the fact is - in MOST of America's eyes - the OU fiasco is a bigger story.
VermontSooner (3 years ago)
Sorry, from above:
1. Another blow for Sooners; Gresham's year over
2. OU win propels BYO into top 10 in new AP poll
3. Stoops: No surgery for Bradford, out 2-4 weeks
The Picker (3 years ago)
OU Glenn, you couldn't be more correct, I was simply trying to be nice.

Original Adman, you show signs of being a genius.Fire the politicians, bull, make a play WHEN THE GAME IS ON THE LINE. When has a Venables defense done that once? Ever?
buster (3 years ago)
Question; What's shorter then my grocery list? People who didn't beat the picker this week.
Venables game on the line, Roy Williams against texas.
hootie (3 years ago)
One thing that not many people are bringing up is that OSU defensive finally stepped up and bad some big stops!
The Picker (3 years ago)
Roy who? Isn't he out of football?

Buster, what a memory!

You supported my argument on Venables, anyhow.

Early in the year, it's always nice to let the readers look up their aliases in the contest results. The hammer will come down soon.

OU_Glenn (3 years ago)
buster, Venables was just the co-defensive coordinator for that game. Mike Stoops was the other co-defensive coordinator. Ever since Mike Stoops left OU to coach at Arizona, the OU defense has been unable to make a stop with the game on the line. The exception is Oregon in the Holiday Bowl. However, that was on an underthrown pass in a meaningless bowl game. I don't consider the 2005 Holiday Bowl to be a big game.
OU_Glenn (3 years ago)
buster, Brent Venable was the co defensive coordinator at OU for that game. The other co defensive coordinator for that game was Mike Stoops. Ever since Mike Stoops left OU to go to Arizona, the OU defense has failed to stop a team with the game on the line. The exception is Oregon in the Holiday Bowl. However, that was on a poorly thrown ball in a meaningless bowl game.
