How Good Is Gundy?
Published: 11/11/2011 1:48 PM

He's a good listener, that's obvious, as several years ago we asked him to please quit calling plays and be a general.

Coaches flash sudden greatness all the time, usually in basketball, where one player can create an undeserved reputation of brilliance for the coach.

Hot hires based on a year or two of winning usually hit the road not long thereafter.

Right now, Gundy is every bit as good as his quarterback Weeden.

OSU QB from 1986-1989
Began his coaching career @ OSU in 2001
HC since 2005
44 yrs old?

OSU a Top 20 program?
1st Class Facilities, Loyal fan base,
Located in football country,
$$$ to spend on coaches, recruiting, & up grades

What potential job out there is better
Than Gundy has it right now?

Will Gundy listen to overtures?
Will T Boone match?
IF not the NFL, why would Gundy leave?

what coach is not as good as their star qb, rb, wr,lineman or coaching staff? another unfair thing to say about OSU. the picker is an idiot when it comes to sporting events. maybe you (picker) should concentrate on your glory days of being second chair tuba in high school and less on gundy's coaching abilities. maybe you should spend more time understanding the game instead of acting like a fool.

Unfair? BIASED is closer to the truth. Wearing your OU cap today Picker?

Stoops has had a better pick of the litter. I guess he's just luckier than Gundy, hey pick?

If you're only as good as your current quarterback, that's not really so great is it.

Hot hire Pickwick? Gundy's been coaching for ten years now, and now he's pretty 'hot'. But I wouldn't exactly call ten years a 'hot' hire.

Pick, what possibly could be your motive in writing such a mean spirited column? Jealousy? Free OU caps?
Solo (last year)
Mean spirited? Really? You homers sure are a sensitive bunch...without Weeden the pokes would be hard pressed to break the top 20...it's Weeden who got them where they are, not Gundy.

Gundy sure has provided all of us some great laughs tho...it's about time for him to give us some new YouTube material...

Ditching the clipboard and offering the assistants bags of cash was a smart move.

Gundy is one of the greatest football geniuses of our time.

And Weeden was a 4 star recruit... right ??? Or did he get developed as a 4 star QB under Coach Gundy and his assistants ??? He's had help as QB with Blackmon and company. Is it coaching or blind luck ?? I don't see T-Boone suiting up on every play but the money sure helped. So yes Picker, I agree with you, Gundy is as good as his QB !!

After Zac Robinson graduated the Pokes were picked last in the big 12 south for the next year, guess what? They won 11 games and barely lost to ou. The Cowboys will dominate the Big 12 and compete for national championships as long as Gundy coaches, you might as well accept it and get used to it people!

Hes Had a couple of great interviews on DP and Rome lately, think its gonna do wonders for recruiting that and the fact their a great program.

There won't be another Weeden come down the Stillwater pike.

Beat the Sooners this year or find another billionaire.

That's a pretty absurd statement. Weeden is definitely the best QB OSU has ever had but to say that another future QB can't be just as successful is shortsighted at best.

I remember when people were saying there wouldn't be another Rashaun Woods...and then Dez Bryant...and then Justin Blackmon...

Laff, Coach actually began his coaching career at oSu immediately after he graduated as the all-time Big 8 passing leader; he was WR coach in 1990. He was the OC by 1994.
sokodad (last year)
Pick, do you still think the TU QB is the best of the three D1 QBs in Oklahoma?

As Weed was third team mid-season All Big XII, it raises a question...

Has a player ever won the Heisman and not been first team all-conference?
The Picker (last year)
Anybody notice how Auburn is doing without its quarterback?

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
