Hurst looking for stronger OU defense

Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops grabbed Demontre Hurst’s attention from day one.

“The moment he was hired,” Hurst said, talking about Mike Stoops during Monday’s Big 12 Media Day events. “The first day I saw him, he came to workouts and saw us work out and was already getting on us. I know what type of businessman he is and dude he wants to be. He really wanted to show his aggression and tenacity early with us.”

Stoops, in his second stint with the Sooners, challenged the team during spring drills and it carried through spring drills.

“He knows what we did last year,” Hurst said. “He reminds every now and then of last year. He really gets us going. We respect him. He's on a mission to get us better and we're on a mission to get better for ourselves.”

Hurst will be a key figure for OU next year. The senior defensive back was an all-Big 12 pick last season and had 55 tackles and an interception.

As a leader, what does he have to do to get the Sooners back on track?

“The leaders on defense have to step up and be bigger leaders this year. I'm the leader back there in the secondary,” Hurst said. “I'm gonna have my guys going. I want to lead the whole defense, but if we all lead together and come together as one, we'll have a special defense.”
