I'd Vote for McGwire

I don't have a Baseball Hall of Fame vote. And, unless I become a major league baseball writer in a major league baseball city, it isn't going to happen.
However, if I had one, Mark McGwire would get my vote.
And, unlike some goofballs that do have hall of fame votes, I would have voted for Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken.
It is amazing to me that baseball media folks, who allegedly know quite a bit about the sport, could leave Gwynn and Ripken off their ballots.
That's what happened in January. How does someone that knows something about baseball leave those guys off the list. I can't imagine.
Of course, I'd would have included McGwire.
McGwire's biggest sin is what he said at a Congressional hearing about steroid. Actually, it is what he didn't say.
He refused to talk about it.
As a result, he was painted with the same broad brush that has touched so many in this scandal.
Whether he did or didn't we don't really know. There's been no positive proof. It is all suspicion.
As a result, I'd vote for McGwire until someone proved to me he did it and that it was illegal at the time.
Otherwise, his records and his statue belong in the hall.

With all due respect, John, I couldn't disagree more. McGwire hit his homeruns on steroids, an artificial performance enhancer. Every record should have an asterisk, and he should not be considered for the Hall.

How many homeruns would Babe Ruth have hit had he used steroids in place of hot dogs and beer?

For that matter, Sosa doesn't belong, either. Both used drugs to achieve their accomplishments, and that should not be rewarded.

I have to disagree with Bill. And agree! Steroids were not banned at that time and no one was tested for amphetemines. How many pitchers were juiced? And on what? I agree with Bob Carpenter, "he still had to hit the ball." However, even as a diehard Cardinal fan, I wouldn't have voted for him. He wasn't that good, that long. One magical season does not a famer make!
